They have come a long way since Kassie was in the NICU where she received donor milk until Kendra could provide her own breastmilk. Now, Kendra is paying it forward by donating her extra milk to help other families.

Sophia was born at 24 weeks weighing only 1.8 pounds. As a micro preemie, she was extremely fragile and immediately required specialized care in the NICU. She needed support for vital functions such as breathing, feeding and temperature regulation and faced significant challenges along the way.

Like many premature and medically vulnerable infants, Sophia developed necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a life-threatening condition that causes severe inflammation of the intestines.

Sophia’s case required surgery when a bacterial infection caused intestinal necrosis (tissue death). Her resulting short bowel syndrome made formula hard to digest. She started receiving donor milk in the hospital. Her mother, Samantha says, “I was not aware that milk banks existed. I was very thankful.”

Incredibly, Sophia survived.

Her story underscores the urgent need to raise awareness about NEC. Together, through research, education, and advocacy, we can work toward a future where NEC no longer threatens the lives of babies or the well-being of their families.

This month, we are joining families, clinicians, researchers, and advocates to raise awareness about NEC, a devastating intestinal disease that primarily affects premature and medically fragile infants.

NEC causes severe inflammation in the intestine, often leading to infection and, in the most severe cases, necrosis (tissue death) of an infant’s gut. It is complex and unpredictable, without a single known cause.

Approximately 1 out of 10 very low birthweight babies develops NEC, and the disease carries a mortality rate of up to 50%. Despite impacting thousands of babies each year, more research, education and advocacy are urgently needed to improve prevention and treatment.

Every baby deserves access to milk. But for many families, donor milk isn’t covered by insurance and can cost around $20 per bottle. That adds up fast.

We were so happy to host you, share some of our favorite recipes, drinks and, of course, crawfish! Can't wait til next year! For me, moving forward was realizing I would always have a relationship with Caroline, even if we didn't occupy the same physical space. Daily I witness the love she is still bringing into the world, and that is the greatest comfort. 🩷

We often hear from parents who have lost a child this question: How can I move forward without letting go?

You don’t let go.
You carry your child with you.

In the love that remains.
In the life you keep living.
In the ways you remember.

Moving forward does not mean leaving them behind.
It means learning to walk, moment by moment, with both sorrow and joy.
