June 12 marks Women Veterans Day, a day dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of women who have served our nation in the United States Armed Forces.
Why do we celebrate Women Veterans Day?
Because for much of American history, the contributions of women in military service were often overlooked, despite their essential role in defending our nation. This date commemorates the signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act of 1948, which allowed women to serve as permanent, regular members of the U.S. military.
Women have answered the call to serve in every generation. During World War II, they served as nurses, mechanics, clerks, communicators, pilots, and leaders through organizations such as the WAC, WAVES, SPARS, Marine Corps Women's Reserve, and the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). Their service helped pave the way for the opportunities available to military women today.
At Rose City AirFest, we celebrate the history of aviation, but more importantly, we celebrate the people behind that history. As an event dedicated to supporting veterans through CampV, Women Veterans Day reminds us that the veteran community includes countless women whose courage, leadership, and sacrifice have strengthened our military and our nation.
Today, we honor all women veterans, past and present, and thank them for their service. Their stories are an important part of our military heritage and an enduring part of the veteran community we are proud to support.
