June 12 marks Women Veterans Day, a day dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of women who have served our nation in the United States Armed Forces.

Why do we celebrate Women Veterans Day?

Because for much of American history, the contributions of women in military service were often overlooked, despite their essential role in defending our nation. This date commemorates the signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act of 1948, which allowed women to serve as permanent, regular members of the U.S. military.

Women have answered the call to serve in every generation. During World War II, they served as nurses, mechanics, clerks, communicators, pilots, and leaders through organizations such as the WAC, WAVES, SPARS, Marine Corps Women's Reserve, and the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). Their service helped pave the way for the opportunities available to military women today.

At Rose City AirFest, we celebrate the history of aviation, but more importantly, we celebrate the people behind that history. As an event dedicated to supporting veterans through CampV, Women Veterans Day reminds us that the veteran community includes countless women whose courage, leadership, and sacrifice have strengthened our military and our nation.

Today, we honor all women veterans, past and present, and thank them for their service. Their stories are an important part of our military heritage and an enduring part of the veteran community we are proud to support.

An A-10 may get your attention, but is really about the mission behind the Rose City Airfest:

Showing up for your local East Texas veterans and supporting the work CampV does for them.

Did you know that before CampV opened, East Texas had the largest concentration of Veterans with the fewest resources tailored to them?

That's our why, every day.

Eighty-two years ago today, Allied forces launched Operation Overlord, the largest amphibious invasion in history. While the beaches of Normandy have become the enduring symbol of D-Day, victory on June 6, 1944, depended just as much on the thousands of airmen who fought above the coast as the soldiers who landed upon it.

In the months leading up to D-Day, Allied air forces waged an intensive campaign to weaken German defenses, targeting rail lines, bridges, airfields, and supply networks across occupied France. By June 1944, Allied air superiority was so complete that German aircraft posed only a limited threat to the invasion fleet.

On the night before the landings, transport aircraft and gliders carried American and British airborne troops deep behind enemy lines. Pilots flew through darkness, heavy anti-aircraft fire, and poor weather to deliver paratroopers whose mission was to seize key bridges, road junctions, and defensive positions. Their actions helped disrupt German reinforcements and protected the flanks of the invasion beaches.

As dawn broke on June 6, fighters patrolled the skies over Normandy while bombers attacked coastal defenses and strategic targets inland. Aircraft ranging from the rugged C-47 Skytrain to iconic fighters such as the P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, and Supermarine Spitfire played critical roles in securing the success of the operation.

By the end of D-Day, more than 150,000 Allied troops had established a foothold in France. Their achievement was made possible by extraordinary cooperation among soldiers, sailors, and airmen working toward a common goal: the liberation of Europe from N**i tyranny.

Today, we remember the courage, sacrifice, and determination of all who participated in Operation Overlord, especially the aviators whose efforts helped make one of history’s most consequential days possible.
