Dear Colleagues, Board Members, Families, and Community Partners:

I am writing to share an important update about the future of Tybee Island Maritime Academy. As you may be aware, our TIMA Governing Board approved the acquisition of property by our Foundation for Maritime Education at the June Governing Board meeting. On July 13, 2026, the purchase of the former Thunderbolt Elementary School property was completed.

This acquisition marks a significant step forward for our organization, giving us the potential for a permanent home to grow our programs and better serve our students for years to come.

Our immediate priority is preparing the site. That work begins with removing the dilapidated portable classrooms currently on the property and getting the grounds ready for remodeling and construction. At the same time, we are meeting with architects and designers to begin developing concepts for the campus. As those concepts take shape, we look forward to sharing them with colleagues, our Board, and the broader community for input before any plans are finalized.

I want to be clear: this purchase does not signal a departure from Tybee Island. We remain deeply engaged with the Memorial Park planning team and the City of Tybee as we work together to determine TIMA's continued presence on the island. We are committed to keeping our Tybee community informed as those conversations progress, and we will share updates as soon as we have more to report.

This is an exciting moment for TIMA, and it would not be possible without the continued support of our families, staff, Board, and community. Thank you for your patience and partnership as we move through this next phase. Questions and input are always welcome.

📣 Great News: There have been several exciting developments for Tybee Island's Memorial Park over the last month! 📣

🗓️ 3/26/26 : Tybee's City Council voted unanimously to approve the Award of a Professional Services Contract for Memorial Park Master Plan Development with CHA Solutions in the Amount of $99,300.00.
