Our Christmas Iguana would like to remind everyone that while Santa is checking his list, we’re checking heat lamps, humidity, and whether anyone snuck an extra hornworm before bedtime.

Thank you to our incredible community for the love, support, laughs, and belief in what we do — and for helping us give these scaly weirdos the best life possible.

From our rescue crew (and one very festive iguana),
Merry Christmas, Magic Valley.
We’ll see you soon… after the iguana finishes opening his presents.

Did you know? Axolotls can regenerate parts of their brain. Yes, you read that right.
Axolotls can regrow their heart, spine, and even parts of their BRAIN. Meanwhile we forget why we walked into the kitchen.

Please share and help spread the word- we can’t do what we do without your help!

You may know us as “the zoo in the mall.”

But did you know we’ve already taken in 76 surrendered animals this year—including Lumpy, a tortoise 🐢 with a damaged shell from years of malnutrition?

Or that we visit local schools, nursing homes, and youth programs to educate and inspire?

The truth is: we’re doing a lot with very little. And today, we need your help.

💚 Just $10 helps us feed, medicate, and care for animals like Lumpy or provide out-of-bound wildlife education for children across the Magic Valley.

Give through the Giving Tree today and be part of something bigger than the zoo walls.

Reptile rescue? Sure. But in Southern Idaho, sometimes the ‘reptile’ has hooves and an attitude problem. We don’t make the rules—we just bring the crates.

Have you ever wondered what a see-through gila monster looked like? Us too, every day... Until today, that is!

Check out this awesome x-ray image of a banded gila monster. The small, circular markings visible in the x-ray are excellent examples of osteoderms.

What's that, you say? What's an osteoderm? Well, we thought you'd never ask. Osteo= bone, derm= skin... Osteoderms are BONE SKIN! Osteoderms are small, bony deposits in the skin that serve a number of functions including armor-like defense from predators and increased surface density to aid thermoregulation.

Despite the fact Bone Skin sounds like the name of a hardcore metal band that nobody would listen to, it's actually a characteristic that is shared across a surprising number of members in the animal kingdom- some lizards like this gila monster pictured here, all species of crocodilians, some dinosaurs, and even mammals like armadillos!

After a brief hiatus to build a zoo- SIRR is back! (technically, we never left) We've continued our mission through our sister organization Twin Falls Zoological Center since it's genesis, and now that it's been up and running for a year we're revamping our efforts through SIRR.

Firstly, we've got a new website: www.southernidahoreptilerescue.org . Check it out!

Second, we've got a wide range of animals needing new homes, so keep an eye on our adoptable animals album here on facebook throughout the weekend and we add photos and info and get it to current. Here's an overview of what's available:

Adult black rat snake
Adult leopard geckos (3)
Adult bearded dragons (2)
Adult (some possibly ancient) box turtles (5)
Adult Wood turtles (2)
Juvenile Mexican spiny tailed iguana
Juvenile Corn snake
Adult albino Nelson's milk snake
Juvenile king snake
Adult red tail boa
Adult Sonoran gopher snake
Male Chinchilla (2)
Male guinea pigs (bonded, with enclosure)
Various aquatic turtles
Adult sulcata tortoises

All adoptions will require an approved application, adoption fee, and proof of enclosure prior to adoption. Keep an eye out through the weekend for updates!
