Running for a school board in Indiana is one of the most direct ways residents can shape local education policy, budgets, and long-term district priorities. According to a recent WFYI guide, candidates must determine their district, gather petition signatures, and file required forms like a statement of economic interests before the summer deadline. There is no filing fee, but candidates should be prepared to meet voters, understand community issues, and actively campaign, since school board seats influence decisions on funding, superintendent hiring, curriculum oversight, and school operations.

As Indiana moves toward more structured and visible school board elections, including clearer candidate requirements and growing public attention, residents considering a run are encouraged to start early, learn their district’s rules, and engage with local election offices for official guidance.
