🇺🇸 Memorial Day Remembrance 🇺🇸
As we spend time with family and friends this holiday weekend, let us take a moment to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is a time to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Originally known as *Decoration Day*, the tradition is believed to have begun following the Civil War, when families and communities decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers in remembrance.
One account traces the observance to 1864 in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, where three women decorated the graves of loved ones lost during the Civil War. In 1868, General John A. Logan, Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, called for a National Day of Remembrance on May 30 for the purpose of decorating the graves of those who died in defense of our country. In 1966, Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by Congress as the birthplace of Memorial Day observances.
Following World War I, the day evolved to honor those lost in all American wars, and the name changed from Decoration Day to Memorial Day.
This Memorial Day, we remember and honor members of our Tuttle community who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation:
