Minutes from Sept. 28 meeting:
Hello Everyone!
First, many thanks to all for your interest in the Red Cross Club. And more importantly, many thanks for your willingness to jump right in and get to work on our important Comfort Kits Collection program. Now, to business!
Our leaders for each of the required elements of this program are as follows (along with initial tasks):
Material Collection: Caroline, Teri and Alisha (contact Paul Brown and request bins for material collection that can be placed in the atrium)
Cards: Aneya and Angela (the A’s - ) (Contact Sandy Z. regarding the type of cards or inserts that are allowed in comfort kits)
Advertising: Jessie (contact Lisa Waldrop about the various possibilities for the advertising blitz prior to the collection period)
And Packaging: Ant and Nelly (contact Sandy Z about the packaging requirements and begin planning for acquiring the required materials).
I will be meeting with each of the leaders (or some part of each) and laying out the actions that need to be started as soon as possible. The plan is to have an advertising blitz before a one or two-week collection period. Packaging will immediately follow the collection period. Anyone that has ideas or suggestions for any of the above actions, please let one of the leaders of that function know of your idea. We can all contribute to all of the areas.
There will be a working meeting for all members Tuesday at 11 am in room 2454 (this room is right around the corner from SOAR). At this meeting we will get everything going! If you cannot attend this meeting but are still wanting to get involved, be sure to let me know.
As for other business, the one thing that everyone can do is get registered with Red Cross as volunteers. This is important as this opens up lots of other opportunities for you to get involved with the Red Cross. Remember, there is no set number of hours you must give to Red Cross. Just do what you can. To get registered, you can go to Volunteer Connection . If you have any difficulties, please let me know and I will help you get registered.
Also, in the not too distant future, we will have an election/volunteers for officers. We will need a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. More about the responsibilities of each soon.
In addition to the Comfort Kit program, the club will also raise money by staffing the Concession Stand at a number of home basketball games. This will require 3-4 members at the game, usually from around 4:30 in the afternoon until the end of the games. We can work in shifts or members can work the whole game. The schedule of what games we will be assigned will be coming out soon. Additionally, Student Organizations at SSCC have agreed to staff the Tuscaloosa Soup Bowl on the last Friday of each month. We have been assigned the Jan. 26, 2018 date. This will be from 10 am until around 12:30 pm, and any members that can will be asked to assist on that date.
Student Organizations have been asked to participate in Pink Out Photo Day, October 10, 11:00 am. This will be a photo of all student organizations in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We will all be wearing PINK! (get your outfit ready – the more pink the better!) and yes that includes me! Also in October, there will be a Halloween Spooktacular on October 31 for local kindergarten classes from Taylorville, Big Sandy and Englewood schools. We can dress up (for kindergarteners – nothing too scary!) and man one of the tables giving out candy. There is also a pumpkin decorating contest. If anyone wants to take the lead in decorating let me know. We will need to register for this.
I know this is a lot to digest and get to work on. Our main focus is the Comfort Kit program at this time.
Thanks to everyone! I am truly excited about what we can do this year and the tone we will set for the years to come.
Mr. Burns
