Happy October DCGAL! Here’s lineup of our upcoming events

Thursday, October 1st, will be a double header! We have a vertical practice at 5:30. There will also be a guest speaker. Tom Whitehurst, Vice Chair of the SCCI, will be speaking at the Bevill Geology building, room 009, at the University of Alabama, 6:30, all are welcome!

Tuesday, October 6th, we will have another vertical practice.

From October 8th to October 11th various DCGAL members will be attending TAG Fall cave in, come and say hi!

Wednesday, October 14th, (AKA the second Wednesday of the month) will be our general meeting. Be sure to swing by to hang out, plan trips, and talk caving!

Finally, October 24th to 25th, will be our weekend to camp out and enjoy Rickwood!

This week we had 2 exceptional vertical practices! On Sunday we practiced knots and put new people on rope for the first time. While on Wednesday we had a cliff day, and worked through various skill checks for our more experienced members. More practices are to come, so stay tuned!

We have 3 more events for the month of September!

On Sunday the 13th, we’ll have a beginner friendly vertical training day; if you’re looking to get on ropes and don’t know where to start, this is your day!

On Wednesday the 16th, we’ll have a cliff day, this is a more advanced practice reserved for those with their own harness and equipment.

Finally, we’ll have a weekend at Rickwood Caverns, on the 26th and 27th.

Our first social meeting was a huge success! We single handedly took over Alcove’s patio with over 20 new members; if this was just the first meeting, we may need a bigger bar. Social meetings will be every second Wednesday of the month, so be sure to clear out your calendar for our next gathering.

We have two new exciting dates for September!

The DCGAL plans on doing ropes practice this Wednesday at 6PM (09/02/26), location will be determined in the signal chat. Next Wednesday at 6PM (09/09/206), we will have our first social meeting at Alcove International Tavern.

Be on the lookout for more events this September, and be sure to join our signal for rope practice locations.

DCGAL Trip report: Druid City Grotto members practicing their climbing skills while exploring a long cave in Kentucky. We surveyed some new passage, brought an entire buffet with us, learned about underground aid and bolting techniques, checked out Dolly Parton’s better than Bucees truck stop, and discovered the tooth of a Dire Wolf (Aenocyon dirus). Many leads remain for the next trip, which will have many more DCGAL members on board.

Throwback Thursday! This Thursdays post features two reports from the initial pushes in Tumbling Rock. The first one is from April 1960 and details a tree being brought in the cave to be used as a makeshift ladder. The second report is from May 1960, and details the discovery of the kings shower. Since then members of the Druid City Grotto have pushed into Inner Sanctum and Topless Dome, essentially finishing what these 60’s folks started.
