The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is preparing for one of the most significant updates in its history.

Beginning in January 2027, the Museum's iconic Permanent Exhibition will temporarily close as it undergoes a comprehensive transformation. The renewed exhibition will incorporate decades of new scholarship, recently acquired artifacts, and survivor testimonies to help visitors better understand not only what happened during the Holocaust—but why it happened and how ordinary people became participants, bystanders, and rescuers.

While construction is underway, visitors will still be able to experience the internationally acclaimed exhibition "Auschwitz. Not Long Ago. Not Far Away.", featuring hundreds of authentic artifacts from Auschwitz and museums around the world.

History is not changing. Our understanding of it is becoming deeper.

Heroic Resistance: 1942: a group of non-Jewish students founded the White Rose Resistance. They chose White Rose for its symbol of purity, innocence and resistance. Distributing leaflets opposed to N**i policies, they were hiding their actions in Munich, Germany. Sophie Scholl and her brother Hans were arrested in 1943. Other arrests followed and 7 White Rose members were sentenced to death. Risking their lives to save Jews. Find The White Rose at Yadvashem.org.

Oklahoma Heroes: The Park Avenue Thrift in Enid is one of our state’s hero organizations. Our 4th Teacher Conference is in Enid on July 28. This wonderful group is providing a grant to the Coalition to teach area educators Holocaust curriculum. Each teacher at the Conference will be educating classrooms of students about Holocaust studies. One teacher will touch many students’ lives. Enid: Welsh for “soul” or “spirit”. A community that lives up to itsheritage.

Let’s talk about Hidden Heroes of the Holocaust. Rabbi Shaul Yedida Elazar remembered a young man who wrote a beautiful song.
In a cattle car with other Jews, on the way to Treblinka, a death camp, Rabbi Elazar began singing this song. In Hebrew it is titled Ani Maamim. “I believe with perfect faith in the coming of the Moshiach and even though he may tarry, nevertheless I wait each day for him to come.” Others sang with the Rabbi, and this beautiful song was sung by many Jews on their way to the gas chambers.

Another Hero of WWII: Chiune Sugihara, Japanese consul to Lithuania, defied his country’s orders by writing between 2,100-3,500 visas for Jews to emigrate, saving possibly 6,000 to 10,000 Jewish lives. Returning to Japan in 1946, Sugihara was dismissed from the Japanese Foreign Service and spent the rest of his life doing odd jobs to make a living. October 4, 1984, Sugihara was recognized by Yad Vashem as “Righteous Among the Living”. Details at Vadvashem.org.

Sometimes there are no heroes. 1982, the movie, “Sophie’s Choice”, from William Styron’s book. Entering Auschwitz with her 2 children, an unnamed N**i thought to be the Angel of Death, Dr. Josef Mengele, forces Sophie to choose. Which one goes to the gas chamber? In agony and terror, Sophie says, “her daughter”, saving her son. Sophie never recovers.

The Secret Weapon Against N**i Germany

Known as the Ritchie Boys, thousands of refugees—many of them Jewish men who had fled N**i persecution—returned to Europe wearing American uniforms. Trained in intelligence, interrogation, and psychological warfare, they helped gather critical information that saved Allied lives and accelerated the defeat of N**i Germany.

Oklahoma has its own connection to this history through Camp Gruber, where many soldiers trained before deploying overseas. Their service reminds us that courage can take many forms—on the battlefield and beyond.
