In case you weren’t already optimistic enough, a new report came out that makes me all the more optimistic about the future in which we can build together.
The last Keep America Beautiful report was from 2020. It said that in the United States, there was 50 billion pieces of trash across the United States. It also found that if every person did their part, and cleaned just 152 pieces of litter, that America could be litter free.
That was six years ago, and yesterday their new report came out. Over those six years the USA has lost 15 billion pieces of litter, and beach trash went down 65%. Litter overall is down 34% in the US. Now only 35 billion pieces of litter across this beautiful nation, and the 152 number has dropped to only 96.
Now that is not to say our work has been finished, far from it. In fact, this movements work will never be truly “finished.” It will never be finished because as long as many crisis reman so deeply rooted in our society, this one will remain as well. Poverty, drug addiction, overconsumption, homelessness are many examples of issues that feed into this one.
There is more work to do. Tulsa recently ranked around the bottom 20 US cities in terms of ozone pollution. Many Oklahoma cities were also in that bottom 20 list. We still have 40% of our goal to go on litter.
We want 100,000 pieces of litter off of Oklahoma streets.
We want to plant 500 native trees in Tulsa.
We want to plant 10,000 native grasses in Tulsa.
We want Tulsa to be the cleanest big city in America.
We want Oklahoma to be the cleanest state.
We want these things.
We want to be an example for what the world can do.
We will continue our work, and we will be the solution to a problem that has long overshadowed this very beautiful state.
