An ICE agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis. This news is devastating. ICE must immediately withdraw its 2,000 agents from Minnesota and Congress must block any new funding to immigration enforcement.

Encouraging Words for People Experiencing Homelessness

When offering words of encouragement, focus on messages that affirm dignity, strength, and hope. Simple, genuine expressions can make a meaningful difference.

What to Say

“You matter.”

“Stay safe.”

“You are not alone.”

“I see you.”

“You deserve kindness.”

“Wishing you strength today.”

Small, respectful gestures—like greeting someone by name, offering a warm smile, or leaving a supportive note—can help foster connection and reduce feelings of isolation.

What to Avoid

Avoid phrases that may sound dismissive, such as “Have a nice day,” if they don’t reflect empathy for their situation.

Avoid preaching, judging, or giving unsolicited advice unless the person specifically asks for guidance.

Avoid making assumptions about their circumstances or needs.

The goal is to communicate respect, compassion, and humanity in every interaction. ♡

NEW BLOG POST:

Tulsa, Oklahoma, is home to a vibrant and diverse immigrant community. From Latin American families to African, Asian, and Middle Eastern women who have made Tulsa their home, the city’s cultural richness is undeniable. Yet, for many women of diversity, the fear of encountering U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) remains a daily reality. Understanding rights, preparing for potential encounters, and connecting with local resources can transform fear into empowerment and isolation into solidarity.

Knowing Your Rights: Legal Protections for Everyone

Every person in the United States—regardless of immigration status—has constitutional rights. These rights apply equally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as they do anywhere else in the country. Women of diversity, especially those from immigrant backgrounds, should be aware of these key protections:

1. The Right to Remain Silent

No one is required to answer questions about immigration status, birthplace, or how they entered the country. A calm statement such as “I choose to remain silent” is a lawful and protective response. This right applies during traffic stops, workplace visits, or home encounters.

2. The Right to Refuse Entry Without a Judicial Warrant

ICE agents cannot enter a home without a warrant signed by a judge. Administrative warrants (often labeled “ICE warrants”) do not grant entry rights. Always ask to see the warrant through a window or door before opening. Verify that it includes a judge’s signature, the correct name, and address.

3. The Right to Legal Representation

Individuals have the right to speak with an attorney before answering questions or signing documents. ICE is not required to provide a lawyer, but one can be contacted privately. In Tulsa, several organizations offer free or low-cost legal assistance for immigrants:

Catholic Charities of Eastern Oklahoma – Offers immigration legal services, including help with green cards, family petitions, DACA renewals, and naturalization.
Address: 2450 N Harvard Ave, Tulsa, OK 74115
Phone: (918) 508-7135

YWCA Tulsa – Immigrant & Refugee Services – Provides legal consultations, citizenship classes, and English language programs to help immigrants integrate and protect their rights.
Address: 1910 S Lewis Ave, Tulsa, OK 74104
Phone: (918) 587-2100

Dream Action Oklahoma – A grassroots organization advocating for immigrant rights, offering community education, and connecting families with legal and social resources.

Latitude Legal Alliance – Works statewide to support immigrant communities through legal aid, advocacy, and rapid response networks for ICE-related emergencies.

ACLU of Oklahoma – Provides legal support and advocacy for individuals facing civil rights violations, including unlawful detention or discrimination based on immigration status.

These organizations form a strong network of support for Tulsa’s immigrant community, ensuring that individuals and families have access to justice, protection, and empowerment.

RECORD, RECORD, RECORD!

How to Safely Record ICE Encounters

1. Know Your Legal Right to Record

In Oklahoma, it is legal to record public officials, including ICE agents, as long as you are in a public space or have the right to be where you are.

You do not need permission to record law enforcement in public areas such as streets, sidewalks, or outside buildings.

You cannot secretly record in private spaces where you do not have consent or legal access (for example, inside someone else’s home without permission).

2. Stay Calm and Keep a Safe Distance

If you decide to record:

Stand at a safe distance—close enough to capture what’s happening but far enough to avoid interfering.

Do not block agents or physically intervene.

Keep your phone steady and visible.

3. Announce That You Are Recording (If Safe)

If possible, calmly say, “I’m recording for everyone’s safety.” This can de-escalate tension and make it clear that your intent is transparency, not confrontation.

4. Capture Key Details

Focus on recording:

Date, time, and location of the encounter

Names, badge numbers, and agency markings on uniforms or vehicles

What agents say and do, especially if they enter a home without a warrant or use force

Any witnesses or bystanders present

If you can’t record video, take notes or voice memos immediately afterward.

5. Protect Your Footage

Save the video to a secure cloud service or send it to a trusted contact right away.

Do not delete or edit the footage.

If detained, your phone may be taken—having the video automatically backed up ensures it’s not lost.

6. Do Not Interfere or Argue

Recording is legal, but interfering with ICE operations can lead to arrest. Stay calm, silent, and focused on documentation.

7. Share Responsibly

If the footage shows potential misconduct or unlawful behavior:

Share it with a trusted attorney or immigrant rights organization first.

Avoid posting publicly until you’ve received legal advice—public sharing can sometimes endanger individuals in the video.

Preparation is a form of empowerment. Women of diversity in Tulsa can take proactive steps to protect themselves...

Create a Family Preparedness Plan

1) dentify trusted contacts who can care for children or dependents if detained.

2) Keep copies of important documents—birth certificates, passports, medical records, and legal papers—in a secure, accessible location.

3) Share this plan with family members and trusted friends.

Memorize Key Phone Numbers

Phones may be confiscated during detention. Write down and memorize contact information for:

•A trusted immigration attorney
•Family members or guardians for children
•Local advocacy organizations
