Helpless Hounds

Helpless Hounds Helpless Hounds is a Tulsa, OK based 501(c)(3) non profit breed-specific rescue for scent hounds.

Helpless Hounds is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, no-kill, breed-specific hound dog rescue organization in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We are dedicated to helping hounds who are left homeless for whatever reason โ€“ in public shelters where they are at high risk of euthanasia due to pet overpopulation, hounds given up by their owners because of difficult circumstances, and those in danger of abuse or neglect. We plac

e our hounds in loving, responsible, committed permanent homes, following a comprehensive adoption process which includes taking considerable care in finding good matches and educating prospective adopters about the responsibilities and costs of bringing a hound dog into their homes and lives. Hounds in our care are spayed or neutered, receive all appropriate veterinary care and treatment, and placed in nurturing foster homes while they await placement in their permanent homes. We assist hound dogs in distress without regard to age, or ease of placement. To the extent our finances allow, hounds in the greatest need take priority. We are determined to keep administrative expenses extremely low so that virtually every dollar taken in goes directly to the care of the animals. Our group remains interested in and committed to the welfare of the hound dog beyond the adoption process. Finally, we strive to work with area shelters and other rescue organizations to develop a network of supporters and volunteers in order to create a better world for homeless hounds.

If you've ever wanted to get into tracking, nose work, or dog sports- and you want a partner who was built for it- meet Jack Ryan.

Jack Ryan is a 5 year old Bluetick Coonhound, and he is a naturally gifted scent dog. His foster family includes someone who ran explosives detection K9s professionally for years, and even they noted that Jack has the drive, the intelligence, and the natural instinct that you just can't train into a dog- it either has it or it doesn't. Jack Ryan has it.

He's extremely smart. He thrives on positive reinforcement. He has a strong natural prey drive and an even stronger nose. He hasn't been formally worked in scent sports yet, but the raw material is absolutely all there- the right family could do something really special with him. AKC Scent Work, K9 Nose Work, tracking titles- this is exactly the kind of dog those sports were made for.

He also happens to be devastatingly handsome, because of course he is. He's a Bluetick.

Jack Ryan is currently in foster in the St. Louis area and is looking for an active home with a securely fenced yard, someone who wants to actually do something with him, and a person who understands that a hound this smart needs a job.

If you've been waiting for the right dog to start getting into tracking and dog sports with, this might be your guy.

Bosco has never met a stranger.

Other dogs, kids, new people, your friends who claim they're "not really dog people," doesn't matter. Bosco is happy to see all of them and he will make sure they know it. He doesn't just fit into the party, he kind of IS the party. Every walk, every hang, every regular Tuesday is just a little better when Bosco's in it.

He's good on a leash, good with kids, good with other dogs, crate trained, house trained, and genuinely just fun to be around. The kind of dog who makes people at the park stop and ask about him.

We think part of it is just who he is. But part of it might be that he came from a situation where he didn't have any of this- the attention, the walks, the people, the belonging- and he just hasn't taken a single bit of it for granted since.

He's not looking for much. Just to be included. And if you let him, he'll make sure you never have a boring day again.

When two tiny 8 week old puppies were being given away in a Walmart parking lot last year, nobody knew what was next for them. They came in together- dirty, flea-covered, and completely irresistible- and they left the same way: side by side, into foster care, into the hearts of everyone who met them. Tia found her people. And we are so happy for her.

Now it's Tamera's turn.

She's grown up a lot since those Walmart parking lot days. She came into our program last July, found a home, and came back to our rescue through no fault of her own. She's been waiting ever since- and at this point, is the hound who has been in our program the longest. Nearly a year in rescue, and still the same goofy, lovable girl she's always been.

Tia's family found her. We're still looking for Tamera's.

Our dear friend Nyssa Walker has been pouring her whole heart into building Shelter Support Network and Friends of TAS from the ground up. Yesterday was their very first transport and it was a FULL success- every single puppy pictured is now safe in Colorado.

Nyssa has been one of the most influential advocates, not just in our corner, but in everyone's corner. She's the kind of person who shows up when things get hard, networks tirelessly for dogs who need a chance, and celebrates everyone's wins like they're her own. We have leaned on her more times than we can count, and she always comes through and has never once let us down.

Watching her build Shelter Support Network into something real and sustainable has been such an inspiration and yesterday it all came together in the most beautiful way. Two of our Helpless Hounds were on that transport, and they got to meet their forever families for the very first time at the end of a long, emotional, miraculous day.

We are so proud of her, so proud of the organizations she's a part of, and so grateful for everyone who donated, fostered, drove, and celebrated. We are thrilled to get to watch Shelter Support Network grow and can't wait to see what they are going to accomplish next- because if their first transport looks like THIS, just imagine what's coming.

Please join us in following them, supporting them, and cheering them on. They've earned every bit of it.

Artemis is the last of our space pups and she's cleared for landing. ๐Ÿš€

If you've seen posts about this litter before, you know the backstory: a litter of puppies pulled from a rural shelter after being scheduled for euthanasia. Three of them came to us as tiny, scared babies and have grown into absolutely spectacular puppies now that they know they're safe. Artemis is proof of that.

She's a big, sweet, silly girl who loves belly rubs, gets along great with kids and other dogs, and has this easy, relaxed personality that you don't usually see in puppies her age. She's playful and engaged but she's not a maniac about it. She's just good company.

She's got that stunning black and tan coloring, floppy ears, giant paws, warm brown eyes, and gorgeous smile- but what photos genuinely cannot capture is how soft she is. Like, unbelievably soft. Her coat looks sleek but the moment you put your hands on her, you want to keep petting her- which she's counting on, because this girl loves to give and receive affection.

T-minus however long it takes you to fill out an application. This one's ready to go.

HE MADE IT!!

Archer- our boy who was hours from euthanasia, who had our entire rescue community holding its breath- has been adopted. And not just adopted! He landed somewhere that feels like it was made for him.

This hound who howled his heart out in a kennel trying to be noticed before it was too late? He now has acres to run. A horse farm. New friends. And two people who are, quite frankly, the kind of adopters dogs and rescues dream about- patient, experienced, loving, and completely devoted to making sure he thrives.

He's getting to be a dog. A real, loved, muddy, wind-in-his-ears, nose-to-the-ground, coonhound-in-his-element dog.

And because this story just keeps getting better- his adopters are local to Tulsa, which means Archer gets the stability if a forever home without interrupting a single heartworm treatment appointment. He is exactly where he needs to be, with exactly the right people, at exactly the right time.

To everyone who shared his urgent post, opened their hearts, and donated toward his care and treatment- you are the reason he is still here. Every dollar, every share, every comment that kept his story alive made a difference for him.

๐Ÿ’› ONE MORE ASK ๐Ÿ’›

We are only about a quarter of the way to covering Archer's full medical costs. Heartworm treatment is expensive, and he still needs his full health workup, X-rays, medications, and all the things to get him completely across the finish line. His adoption fee doesn't come close to covering it, and we want to make sure his incredible adopters and our rescue can give him everything he needs.

If you'd like to donate to help us celebrate his happy ending, you can use the button on this post or any of the methods below

Thank you. We fought so hard for him to be alive. Now he's doing us one better- he's โœจlivingโœจ.
