Congratulations to Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, Director Tony Corbell and his hard-working team!
It’s a wonderful unveiling of the Merle Haggard statue and recognizing his contributions to music and specifically Oklahoma. We urge any and all possible to attend their event at 5:00pm on Thursday, Oct. 10 to see the unveiling of Merle’s statue in front of the Muskogee Civic Center on behalf of the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.
We had a wonderfully long association as our Jim Halsey Company represented Merle Haggard for personal appearances for over many years. This included a tribute by Merle and his band to his idol Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys at the historic Cain’s Ballroom, broadcast at noon on (50k watts) KVOO Radio. Merle’s band was dressed like Bob Wills band in white shirts, string ties and white hats. Merle announced, “Today, we are not Merle Haggard and the Strangers. We are the reenactment of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys” and honoring. Merle also announced on the bus to the band and others, “Anybody requesting a Merle Haggard song today will be thrown out. This is a Bob Wills day”. Even Bob Wills manager and announcer came out of retirement to help reenact the 30 minute broadcast with authenticity.
The event was put together by Larry Shaeffer, Cain’s Ballroom owner, with collaboration from Merle’s agent, Jim Halsey. It was spectacular! There are a few of us still around with great Merle stories. Maybe some at the unveiling.
For additional Merle info, my late son, Sherman shot film and video and functioned like a manager at various events. Sherman had countless hours of informal conversation on Merle’s bus (the Locomotive) with visitations of Kris Kristoferson. The two relaxed into hours of conversation involving every subject possible. These hours of Sherman’s video history, all with permission, are in the archival catalog of the Jim Halsey Starmaker Museum in Independence, KS.
Thanks for the journey with Merle Haggard with all of the Halsey family. The new statue is a fitting tribute. See you there,
Jim Halsey
