For a few years the upper part of Sasco has been closed off for our use. Each time we convened for an event there were more signs and gates in place along with rumors of development coming. Earlier this year we heard that the lower portion of Sasco had exchanged hands to the same development company and knew it was headed somewhere. Late this summer that developer announced plans (Google La Osa Project) to rezone a huge chunk of the area, over 3,000 acres, from rural to industrial in order to pitch a data center. This includes the area historic Sasco is on and much of the land north of it. We were able to see signs of those changes this last weekend with the public notice boards.
What does this means for Desert Hawks events like Red Sleigh Down? It means we have to use other property, the developer simply is not able to accommodate us due to liability and prescriptive use reasons even in the pre-construction phase. We have been preparing for some time for this case and while we are sad this is the outcome, especially since we have so much history at this venue and the venue itself is so integral to the area history, it was enough of a reality check to look into purchasing land for exclusive use.
We happy to say that the purchase is complete and will give us direct access to 80 acres plus adjacent access to 585 BLM acres. This land is located near Bowie and San Simon Arizona about 150 miles from Sasco toward New Mexico. The process to permit things such as septic for percent facilities moves along at a crawl but we should be able to host Red Sleigh Down there this year with some restrictions such as primitive camping (no RV/Camper) and no open fires and the pathways may not be suited for lower sedans as we work to blade in the roads. But the good news is that there is plenty of foliage, a few degrees cooler then Sasco, has no river to cross and the AO is within minutes of the I10 and two truck stops. That’s it for now, stay tuned for more soon.
RSD announcement at the new AO is incoming soon, save the date for Dec 13. A first look at the AO will follow as well. Thank you for your continued support!
