Today, on World Refugee Day, the Orthodox Church reminds us that every refugee is more than a statistic, they are an icon of God.
Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself knew the life of a refugee. As an infant, He fled with the Most Holy Theotokos and the Righteous Joseph into Egypt to escape the violence of King Herod. The Holy Family experienced fear, uncertainty, and displacement, just as millions of men, women, and children do today.
Throughout Holy Scripture, we are repeatedly called to welcome the stranger, care for the vulnerable, and show mercy without partiality. Whether they flee war, persecution, violence, or disaster, refugees deserve to be received with compassion, dignity, and love.
As Orthodox Christians, our response must never be shaped by fear or indifference, but by the Gospel. We may not be able to solve every crisis, but we can pray, offer practical help, support humanitarian efforts, and remember that every act of mercy offered to the suffering is offered to Christ Himself.
Today, let us pray for all refugees throughout the world, for their safety, healing, and hope. May God strengthen those who have lost their homes, comfort those who mourn, protect the innocent, and guide all people toward peace and reconciliation.
“I was a stranger and you welcomed Me.” (Matthew 25:35)
Lord Jesus Christ, grant peace to the displaced, shelter to the homeless, comfort to the afflicted, and open our hearts to receive every person with the love You have shown to us.
