SUBJECT: we will not have a party for workers unless we first address campaign finance reform
FULL TEXT:
Elections have a way of upending conventional wisdom. Last Tuesday made abundantly clear the Democratic Party is not even close to being the party for workers and their families. Ballot measures to increase the minimum wage in deep blue states like California and Massachusetts failed by wide margins. Meanwhile, ballot measures to increase minimum wages in Alaska, Arizona and Missouri won by relatively large margins. The Democratic Party has become the party of the wealthy and elites, NOT workers.
Where do we go from here? The reality is that big and foreign money interests are calling the shots in the Democratic and Republican parties. The Supreme Court decision Citizens United unleashed unlimited spending by corporations in our elections. More and more money by big money and foreign interests is being spent in primaries, where oligarchs can have a larger influence. This last election saw historically-high levels of spending by billionaires and foreign entities and individuals in our elections, particularly in the primaries. The reality is we are not going to have a party that represents workers while the parties are beholden to wealthy donors.
Our first priority must be changing the way campaigns are financed by overturning Citizens United and instituting public financing of campaigns. Trying to reform the parties to represent workers while they are beholden to wealthy donors is a losing proposition. As long as the parties are beholden to wealthy donors, we will not have a party for workers.
The re-election of Donald Trump does not mean the end of our democracy. The movement that propelled Donald Trump into the White House and gave Republicans majorities in the Senate and likely in the House is indeed larger than Donald Trump. It would be a huge mistake to think Donald Trump is an aberration in our democracy or that his supporters are a symptom of false consciousness.
The reality is that wealth inequality has increased for decades including under the Biden administration. Inflation was not just a result of COVID. The cost of living for ordinary people has been increasing for decades. COVID just exacerbated already existing problems we are facing. The increases in immigration have indeed worsened the prospects for the working class in the U.S., which the Democratic Party has refused to acknowledge. Another key finding is that the costs of tariffs are indeed felt by countries like China that are dumping huge amounts of largely state-subsidized manufactured goods like solar panels and electric vehicles across the world as a way to wipe out competition. The tariffs, contrary to many neoliberal economist claims, are a way of supporting domestic manufacturing. The Kamala Harris campaign did nothing to meaningfully address the concerns of working people, which is why she lost by a large margin.
We can have a party that represents workers in the United States. It happened in the 1940s when Franklin Eleanor Roosevelt was President. First, we must address the issue of campaign finance reform.
Yours in solidarity!
