Choose Wild

Choose Wild We are the Population and Sustainability Program of the Center for Biological Diversity. The Earth’s population now tops more than 7 billion people.

The rapid growth of our human population is pushing other species off the planet in what most scientists are calling the sixth mass extinction crisis. This population explosion continues to drive all the major environmental problems that plague our planet — including climate change, habitat loss, ocean acidification and resource depletion. The Center for Biological Diversity has been working to ad

dress the connection between rampant human population growth and the extinction crisis since 2009. Our innovative outreach and public-pressure campaigns — like our award-winning Endangered Species Condoms project — focus on common-sense solutions, including the empowerment of women and girls, the education of all people, universal access to birth control, sustainable consumer choices, and a societal commitment to giving all species a chance to live and thrive. In 2013 we expanded our population program to encompass overconsumption and sustainability, too — since these issues are intricately tied to the impact of human population on endangered species and the health of our planet. The program uses a combination of creative media, advocacy, outreach, and the expansion of our nationwide network of population and sustainability activists to keep these critical issues in the spotlight. To help ensure a world that's livable for other species — and beautiful, healthy and prosperous for our own —please share our page with your friends and sign up for our free monthly population and sustainability e-newsletter at www.biologicaldiversity.org/population_sustainability.

When building emergency go-to bags, sexual and reproductive health products tend to get left out. That's why the Center for Biological Diversity is distributing sexual health emergency preparedness kits to address these needs when extreme weather disrupts access.

"We are actively recruiting partners to do this across the United States," the organization's senior campaigner, Kelley Dennings, told CG.

The Center for Biological Diversity partnered with the University of Arizona this past Friday to distribute our free sexual health emergency preparedness kits on campus. It's the first time we have distributed on a University campus.

“Sexual health might not be the first thing that people think of when preparing for disasters, but it really is a crucial component of the overall health and safety." -Kelley Dennings

The initiative aims to provide essential supplies like emergency contraception and period products to ensure residents are prepared for climate-fueled disasters.

🥑 🏈 On Super Bowl Sunday more people in the U.S. eat avocados than any other day.

To produce all that guac, the avocado industry is scarfing up vast swaths of Mexican forest, where millions of monarch butterflies migrate for the winter and other imperiled wildlife struggle to survive.

We need to act now — and the lead-up to Super Bowl Sunday is the perfect time to start.

Tell U.S. grocery stores to adopt an avocado-sourcing policy that prevents deforestation and protects monarch butterflies.🦋 Link in bio.
