May is Foster Care Awareness Month, and the Foster and Adoptive Council of Tucson would like to honor Angela & Derek Acuna who was nominated by their agency for Foster Family of the Year!! Congratulations and thank you for all you do!

Aviva Children's Services would like to nominate Angela and Derek Acuna who are the kinship placement for their great-niece. Angela and Derek chose to care for their great-niece after her great grandmother became too ill to continue the care for the two-year-old. Angela was also close with the child's mother, her niece, whom she loved very much and wanted to support her niece by stepping up to be placement.

They have fully embraced raising her and taking on a parenting role. Angela and Derek have brought structure and routine to her life with love and attention. Because of them, their great-niece is catching up to her peers developmentally with language skills, she is able to listen and follow directions better while still being allowed to be a toddler, and becoming a self-assured, outgoing child. Angela and Derek are also enrolled in the same tribe as the child, keeping the child closely connected to her culture while in foster care. Angela and Derek embody the definition of kinship care.

May is Foster Care Awareness Month, and the Foster and Adoptive Council of Tucson would like to honor Lydia Tillmaand who were nominated by their agency for Foster Family of the Year!! Congratulations and thank you for all you do!

Lydia is a pediatric nurse who witnessed a severely fragile newborn in need of care and an appropriate home. The child held and still holds a multitude of medical diagnoses and had no visits from his parents, so she obtained her foster care license in order to provide the child with love and medical expertise in her care. She takes him to endless appointments weekly, celebrates each small progress he makes, misses work to be present for his needs, and pays out of pocket for childcare due to daycares not being able to provide the level of care he requires.

Lydia has no relation to the child but opened her heart and home to welcome him as her son if the opportunity were to arise. Regardless of the outcome, she has gone above and beyond for him, offering him what the average individual could not and likely would not.

May is Foster Care Awareness Month, and the Foster and Adoptive Council of Tucson would like to honor the Forster Family who was nominated by their agency for Foster Family of the Year!! Congratulations and thank you for all you do!

The Forster family has an amazing heart and love to share with those in need. They started their foster journey about a year ago and have been all in to help families and children. They took the first child we presented to them with no questions or fear about the hard behaviors and trauma background. They refused to use transportation for placement and strived the best to keep consistency, providing transportation beyond their responsibilities. They had contact with the birth family on the very first day of parenting time, without fear or hesitation and had a warm first encounter. They have extended their beds to keep at least two of the siblings together and start learning how to share and becoming good sisters.

They have diligently worked closely with their needs and everyone in the team has acknowledged the family as being just wonderful and always going above and beyond to exceed their placements' needs. They invited the birth parents to the Holiday and birthday celebrations and worked closely with them, encouraging and guiding them through the process. The littles have thrived in their home, and their hope is to help with successful reunification or becoming the forever home for them. They have been the light through this whole case and shown Christ in all they do through loving hurting children and families and continue to be obedient to His call. It has been a true privilege and honor to serve alongside them.

May is Foster Care Awareness Month, and the Foster and Adoptive Council of Tucson would like to honor Monalysa Valenzuela & Esteban Cota Aaya II who were nominated by their agency for Foster Family of the Year!! Congratulations and thank you for all you do!

We would like to nominate the Valenzuela Family for the amazing work they have done to support their current placements, twin siblings. This was the family's first placements since they were licensed and although they knew there would be some challenges due to the children's health conditions, the family was up for the challenge. They have not stopped advocating for them, to ensure all their services and the supplies needed to take care of them. The twins are hitting amazing milestones because the parents take the time to work 1x1 with each twin to encourage and strengthen them physically and emotionally. They have also considered opening their homes to any sibling the twins may have as placement. The Valenzuela's continuing to support the needs of the twins with their prompt responses to the team, they are amazing with documentation and provide clear communication for all updates regarding the girls.

The family has their own 4 children and even though their hands are full, they have shown their love to foster care and want to provide a loving and stable environment to foster children. They have gone out of their way to ensure that they are doing their part with share parenting with biological parents by transporting to visits with all the supplies, monitors and needs the twins will need. They have ensured that the medical updates are provided to DCS in order for the parents to be current with any updates. They do a great job working well with their licensing worker/agency.
