Sometimes it’s not about writing at all.

When students resist writing, it’s easy to assume they just don’t want to do the task.

But often, something else is getting in the way. Maybe it's their confidence or ideas. Maybe they just don't know where to begin.

When we take a step back and look at the bigger picture, we can better support students and help them express what they’re really thinking.

Start anywhere.

This wasn’t the original plan.

Someone started building with the racetrack pieces and something clicked.

Now they’re creating vertical roads, drive-able buildings, and entire systems using the same materials.

That’s the beauty of open-ended STEM.

It doesn’t stay in one lane.

When kids are free to explore, they don’t just follow ideas… they expand them.

Focus and follow through.

There’s something powerful about watching someone take aim.

The stance. The stillness. The attention to detail.

Skills like this don’t happen overnight.

They come from practice, adjustment, and learning from each attempt.

STEM shows up here too; in angles, force, and precision.

But more than that, it shows up in the discipline to keep improving.

Start simple. Let them build from there.

Tinker stations don’t have to be complicated to be effective.

With a small collection of materials and a space to explore, students begin to design, test, and problem-solve on their own.

The goal isn’t perfection.t’s giving them the opportunity to think, adjust, and try again.

Care makes the difference.

This tower didn’t happen all at once.

It took patience. Careful placement. Small adjustments.

Even with magnets, balance still matters.

One wrong move and it all comes down.

You can see the focus here. The awareness. The quiet problem-solving.

These are the moments that build confidence. Not just structures.

Little tasks matter.

It’s easy to overlook moments like this.

Just a child with a scoop.

But look closer. There’s focus, control, coordination, and determination.

What seems small to us can feel like a real challenge to them.

And that’s where growth happens.

At Dotty’s Place, we value these moments just as much as the big builds and projects.

Because every step forward matters.

STEM is already happening all around us.

Sometimes we think STEM has to be something structured or planned out.

But when you look closely, it’s already part of what children naturally do:building, exploring, questioning, and making sense of the world around them.

When we recognize these moments, we can support learning in ways that feel natural instead of forced.

Build. Test. Adjust.

This started as a simple idea: build a marble run.

But nothing about it stayed simple.

Pieces didn’t line up. Ramps collapsed. Supports had to be improvised.

So they adjusted.

They used what they had. They tested again. They made it work.

I could have stepped in and “fixed” it, but the real learning happens when they figure it out themselves.

That’s the difference between completing a task and understanding it.

Try it and see.

Sometimes STEM looks like careful planning.

Other times… it looks like pouring, mixing, and seeing what happens next.

Not every design works. Not every idea turns out the way they expect.

But that’s where the learning is.

At Dotty’s Place, we make room for both the structure and the freedom to explore.

Because understanding doesn’t come from watching… it comes from doing.

Big learning starts with small movements.

It’s easy to overlook fine motor skills, but they play a huge role in how children learn and interact with the world.

Simple activities, like cutting, sorting, placing, and building, help develop coordination, focus, and independence.

This challenge is a simple way to build those skills through play, using materials you may already have at home or in the classroom.
