For those wondering what comes next, proposed data center ordinance revisions are expected to be presented at the June 11 Planning & Zoning Commission meeting.

The moratorium was intended to give the city time to review the existing ordinances and consider potential changes. June 11 should provide a first look at what city staff has been working on.

If you’ve been following the issue, this is likely a meeting worth paying attention to.

Ohio estimated these tax breaks would cost $136 million in 2025.

The number for 2025 ended up at $1.6 BILLION.

A major reason for the increase: data centers.

And according to the article, those savings are flowing to companies like Meta, Google, and Amazon.

These are some of the richest companies in the world…how much do we really need to give them?

Ohio’s biggest tax break for data centers is more expensive than once thought. A lot more expensive.

Appreciate the work Charlie Berens and Prescott Balch are doing to bring attention to what communities across the country are dealing with around AI data centers.

They also took the time to visit us here in Illinois back in March and helped bring awareness to the resident side of this issue, not just the side people usually hear from Big Tech and developers.

Thank you Charlie Berens and Prescott Balch for all your efforts!

For years, people were told these data centers were basically “just quiet buildings” that nobody would notice.

Now electric bills are jumping, power grids are getting stressed, and utility companies are openly talking about AI/data center demand driving costs higher.

The Chicago Sun-Times just reported ComEd customers could see bills rise at least 12% starting in June, with data center growth being part of the pressure on the grid.

Turns out a building that uses the power of 1,400 big box stores might actually affect something after all.

At this point, data centers are speedrunning the process of making entire towns hate them.

And honestly, articles like this are a big reason why. People tend to get a little irritated when land deals, meetings, and planning discussions are happening quietly in the background while the public is being told little to nothing is going on.

Granite City’s already been dealing with this for a while now. The only difference is more people are starting to realize just how much was happening behind the scenes before the public ever had the full picture.

Illinois lawmakers are pushing for rules that would require public hearings and, in some cases, give residents a chance to force a vote before a project moves forward.

It’s happening because people in towns all over are pushing back after seeing how these deals get rushed through with little notice and even less input.

Now the focus is starting to turn toward transparency and giving residents a real say.

If a project is solid, it should be able to hold up in front of the people who actually have to live next to it.

Illinois lawmakers are considering a bill that would add public hearings and a referendum option for data center projects.
