Our next Beloved Community reading suggestion is Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community? by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
It may have been written more than 50 years ago, but the question at the heart of this book feels remarkably present:
Where do we go from here?
Dr. King wrote about poverty, racism, economic inequality, division, and the struggle to build a society where every person has the opportunity to live with dignity.
He challenged us to understand that the goal isn’t simply to remove injustice.
The goal is to build something better.
A Beloved Community.
One rooted in justice.
One where our differences don’t determine whose life matters.
One where we don’t accept suffering as inevitable.
One where ordinary people recognize that they have a role in creating change.
And perhaps that is what makes this book worth reading right now.
Dr. King’s work wasn’t finished when the laws changed. It wasn’t finished when he gave the “I Have a Dream” speech. And it certainly wasn’t finished when he died.
The work of building Beloved Community is ongoing.
So this month, let’s read the words of the person who helped give us the language for that vision—and ask ourselves:
Where do we go from here?
