Free To Run Foundation

Free To Run Foundation Organizing races and other events to raise awareness of human trafficking and issues of social justice.

Free To Run Foundation is a nonprofit with the mission to raise awareness of human trafficking and social injustices around the world through races, endurance events and challenges. The World Race for Hope is the name of our 5k race held in various cities in the United States. We have held organized races in Troy, Ohio, Columbus, Ohio and New York City. In 2019, we launched an education and advoc

acy program for teenagers called Teens Stand Against Trafficking (TSAT). TSAT has chapters in Troy, Ohio (for the Dayton area) and Chicago (north suburbs). In 2020, a program was launched by our Chicago teen ambassador called Balance Boxes. This program creates educational and fun boxes for underserved kids in Kindergarten through 5th grade. As of September 2020, Balance Boxes has volunteers in dozens of states and several countries.

Our 17th annual 5k in Troy is less than a week away! This free and informal event is a great way to start the new year, and while helping us raise awareness of human trafficking. The 5k in Troy starts at 10 am on the river levee near Hobart Arena, and if you can’t make it to the in person event, you can do the virtual 5k wherever you are anytime in January. We also brought back the January 50 Mile Challenge as another option to get you moving at the start of the year.

Today is the last day of our World Race for Hope Virtual 5k, and we want to thank everybody who participated. February 1st is also Freedom Day, honoring the day President Lincoln signed the resolution that would later become the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery (except as punishment for a crime). Today the US Senate passed a resolution designating January as National Trafficking and Modern Slavery Prevention Month. One of the goals of establishing national days or months is to raise awareness, which of course is our goal for the World Race for Hope. In this, our 16th year, we reached 100 registrations with participants in 13 states, raised over $700, and introduced a new event, the January 50 mile Challenge. We encourage you to continue to learn, tell others, and evaluate how you might use your passions and talents to fight for freedom for all.

We are just over a week into the new year and National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. What resolutions have you made for 2023 or what steps are you already taking to try to make a difference in the fight against human trafficking? It’s not too late to join our January 50 Mile Challenge and commit to running, walking, or hiking at least 50 miles this month to help raise awareness. It’s free to join (link in bio), and when you join the challenge, you can share your progress with your friends and followers, and educate them about human trafficking and what we can do to combat it. We will continue to share facts and what’s being done around the world to prevent it throughout the month.

Run or walk our free 5k on New Year’s Day, either in Troy, Ohio or virtually participate wherever you are during the month of January, to help us combat human trafficking. This is the 16th annual NYD race, and in the last few years we changed the race to a free, informal event on the bike path along the river in Troy. Any donations we receive will go towards our operations and our mission to educate the public about human trafficking. Register for the in person event or virtual at https://runsignup.com/worldraceforhopetroy (link in bio).

This month marks five years since our friend came to Ohio to visit and do a photo shoot for us with . It’s hard to believe it has been five years, but frankly the past 2.5 years have felt so much longer. As we prepare to work on year end initiatives and get ready for our 16th annual World Race for Hope Troy & Virtual 5k on New Year’s Day, we wanted to share what’s been going on with human trafficking.

-The COVID-19 pandemic introduced new risks and challenges, including cases of online exploitation increasing
-As refugees flee Ukraine, the increased vulnerability resulting from the conflict has led to an increased risk of human trafficking.
-A recent International Labour Organization report estimates that 50 million people were in slavery in 2021, a significant increase over the last five years.

We are not without hope though. More people and organizations, and more resources, are joining the fight against human trafficking. How can you be a light, a source of hope and inspiration with the darkness around us? There are opportunities to get involved, to raise awareness and be an advocate for change.
