For everyone who carries the weight of this Aniversary of Hurricane Helene…

Some journeys begin with leaving.
Some begin with staying.
Some begin with no choice at all.
And some begin with the rubble still at our feet,
reminders of what was lost,
and of what we are still holding on to.

Maybe your struggle lives in unanswered questions.
Maybe it lingers in the silence.
Maybe it roars in the noise.
Maybe life feels stuck—
or moving too fast for a tender heart to follow.

Hear this:
You are not less because you ache.
You are not broken because you bend.
Healing is not a straight line—
it is a sacred unfolding,
a brave surrender,
a quiet breath that says, “I am still here.”

And like Stacy Davis said:

💙 It is ok to be ok.
It is ok to not be ok.
It is ok to reach out and say,
“I cannot carry this alone.”

Because you don’t have to.
Not now. Not ever.
There are hands to steady you,
hearts to hold you,
a community ready to rise with you.

If you need help—ask.
If you have hope—share it.
Together, we are stronger . 🕊️

✨ One Year of Soul to Soles Disaster Relief – A Look Back ✨

One year ago, Hurricane Helene tore through our mountains and left behind heartbreak, devastation, and loss we will never forget. What began as shock and grief quickly turned into action, and that’s when Soul to Soles Disaster Relief was born—not out of an organization, but out of love, faith, and a desire to meet people right where they were, with both “souls” and “soles.”

This year has been a journey. And when we look back, it’s not just about the destruction—it’s about the people, the stories, and the hope that bloomed even in the darkest days.

🌟 We remember the semi-truck that drove all the way from Arkansas, packed with supplies from strangers who simply wanted to help. We remember the countless donors—every single person who gave what they could—because together those gifts became meals, shelter, and hope.

🌟 We remember the families who had nothing left, but still welcomed us in with tears and prayers. We remember being able to provide Thanksgiving meals when kitchens were empty, and the miracle of watching Christmas come alive again for children who thought it wouldn’t. The joy in their eyes as they opened gifts was a reminder of what community really means.

🌟 We remember the camper that became a lifeline for a family who had lost their home. We remember the financial help we were able to raise so another family could purchase a brand-new home after losing everything. These weren’t just “donations”—they were stepping stones back toward stability, dignity, and healing.

🌟 We remember walking the banks of the North Toe River during search and recovery missions, and we remember helping families in every corner of our mountain communities—from Swannanoa to Newland, from Bakersville to Spruce Pine, from Burnsville to Black Mountain, from West Jefferson to Creston. Each place holds faces and stories we will never forget.

🌟 We remember March, when we planted Seeds of Hope together. A combined gardening event that gave families the chance to replenish their gardens, to put new life back into the ground, and to look toward spring with a renewed sense of growth and possibility. It was more than planting seeds—it was planting hope.

This past year has been filled with both grief and gratitude. We’ve seen the worst that nature can bring, but we’ve also witnessed the best of humanity. Every hug, every prayer, every donation, every volunteer hour—it all mattered.

Soul to Soles is not just an organization. It is a living testimony of what happens when people come together with compassion and a willingness to serve. It is proof that even in the hardest of storms, love finds a way to shine through.

As we stand at this one-year mark, we honor every life lost, every family still rebuilding, and every single person who has walked this journey with us. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. 💙

Due to personal and family obligations and sickness, we’ve not been able to be as involved this summer in continuing our work in WNC. We haven't forgotten about WNC or its beautiful people, and we hope to get back into the rebuilding of homes and lives soon. WNC has, and will always be, forever in our hearts.

Here’s to carrying forward the mission, to walking side by side with those in need, and to reminding the world that even in the darkest valleys, there is always light.

" I give myself permission to heal",
Maybe I take a step away,
leave WNC behind for a breath,
give myself the grace of distance.
Because healing is not abandonment,
it is courage.

" I give myself permission to heal",
Maybe I host a potluck with my neighbors,
like those first nights after the hurricane—
when the lights were gone but the fire of community burned brighter than any lamp.

" I give myself permission to heal",
Maybe I volunteer by the rivers,
planting hope in the mud,
lifting broken beams from broken homes.
Because healing is also building.

" I give myself permission to heal",
Maybe I throw flowers into the water—
to honor the souls we lost.
Each petal a prayer,
each ripple a memory.

" I give myself permission to heal",
maybe—I show up at community gatherings,
to speak of resilience,
to tell the truth:
“We were bent, but not broken.
We were wounded, but not defeated.”

“There is no wrong way to heal, only the brave way.”

And so, this anniversary,
Healing is not a single path.
It is many doors, many choices.
Every way is valid.
Every way is sacred.

And as I give myself permission to heal,
I also open the door for you.
To rest.
To rebuild.
To remember.
To rise.

“We heal not only for ourselves,
but to give others permission to do the same.” 💜

🔥 “327 days later, I’m still asking…” 🔥
How do we hold on to that sacred feeling—
that brotherhood, that unity, that bond we lived
in the days after Hurricane Helene?

When politics did not divide us,
when elections did not matter,
because our one true vote
was for community.
For love.
For each other. 🫶🏽

How do we keep that spirit alive—
not just in the storm,
but in the stillness of everyday life?

I’ve learned this:
It’s not about convincing others.
It’s about carrying it within me.
Breathing it.
Walking it.
Living it.

Because nearly one year later,
I still believe.
We still believe.
That the place of unity we dreamed of is not fantasy—
it’s memory.
It’s proof.
We were there.
September 27th lives inside us still. 🌅

And if it lived once,
it can live again.

"The truest revolutions are not shouted in crowds,
but whispered in the heart—
a daily choice to love beyond ourselves."

10 months after Hurricane Helene We walked into this house in Swannanoa... and the water told its story.

The smell hit first—
a sour memory of floodwaters rising fast,
of ceilings touched by the tide
and lives nearly lost in the roar.

This was not just a storm.
This was a reckoning.

People clung to rooftops,
hearts pounding like thunder.
The winds screamed.
And still—they waited.
For rescue. For hope.
For a tomorrow.

Some prayers were answered.
Some weren’t.

But neighbors came.
They braved the waters.
Carried each other through the dark.
Because in these mountains,
we don’t leave each other behind.

If these walls could speak,
they’d sob first.
But then, in the quiet:
“You are fierce.
You are fire through the flood.
You are Appalachian strong.”

This house… it still weeps.
And so do we.
But we are marked not just by water—
we are marked by love,
by courage,
by survival.

We are still here.
And that
is extraordinary.
