On Tuesday, June 2, 2026 around 3:15 p.m., Bend Fire & Rescue responded to reports of a train fire just south of Baker Road near Deschutes River Woods.
911 callers from Morning Star School and BNSF reported flames coming from the lead locomotive. Crews arrived to find fire and smoke on top of the engine near the braking system. Using fire extinguishers and water, firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire. No injuries were reported.
The train’s engineers were traveling north from Klamath Falls when they felt a jolt and noticed smoke. They safely stopped the train before reaching town—preventing blocked roadways and stopping the fire in an area with an existing fire break.
🚧 BNSF temporarily halted rail traffic on Cheyenne Road to allow firefighting hoses to be deployed to the locomotive.
This incident highlights both the complexity of fire responses and the importance of teamwork. Locomotives generate immense electricity, making fires like this especially dangerous. Thanks to coordination between train crews and firefighters, the situation was handled quickly and safely.
It also shows the power of prevention. A community-wide effort—led by the
Deschutes River Woods Neighborhood Association, Bend Fire & Rescue, Deschutes Rural Fire Protection District #2, Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM), and BNSF—helped create a fire break along the tracks through vegetation clearing. This work was funded by a grant through OSFM and completed last year.
That work didn’t just protect against wildfire—it helped stop this incident from spreading to the neighborhood.
