Inspiring the next generation of educators means equipping them with both the pedagogical tools and the moral conviction to build truly inclusive classrooms.
Over the past few weeks, Dr. Kim Pinckney has had the privilege of stepping into higher education classrooms across New Jersey—connecting with aspiring educators at Rowan University and graduate scholars at Rutgers University—New Brunswick Graduate School of Education.
The focus went far beyond statutory checkboxes. When we talk about New Jersey’s mandated curricula—from the Amistad and Holocaust laws to AAPI, Latino & Hispanic history, LGBT & Persons with Disabilities contributions —we are not managing compliance; we are fulfilling a moral imperative. As Dr. Pinckney shared with these future classroom leaders: "Teaching the truth isn’t radical. It’s professional."
Across both sessions, participants unpacked how the NJEA bridges foundational theory with day-to-day instructional design:
✅Pedagogy That Empowers: Grounding curriculum in the synergy of Understanding by Design (UbD) for structure and transfer, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) for barrier-free access, and Culturally & Historically Responsive Education (CHRE) for identity, intellect, and joy.
✅Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors: Applying Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop’s framework to authentic disability and neurodivergent representation—moving from assimilation to true inclusion, centering protagonists like those in "A Day with No Words" and "Good Different", and uplifting disabled voices across history and STEM.
✅Proactive Over Reactive Design: Shifting away from "fixing the student" toward proactively designing environments where learner variability is planned for from day one.
✅Equipping Pre-Service Leaders: Hands-on exploration of the NJEA Consortium Repository of Resources and connecting students to the New Jersey Aspiring Educators Association ( ) community.
