Did you know?

🏴 In June 1866, a small army of Irish-American Civil War veterans crossed the border into Canada carrying a green flag and a plan nobody in Washington had approved.

The Fenian Brotherhood, a movement of Irish immigrants and veterans dedicated to Irish independence, believed that seizing Canadian territory could be used as leverage against the British Empire back home. At the Battle of Ridgeway, a force of these veterans actually defeated a larger Canadian militia unit before withdrawal and a lack of reinforcement ended the campaign within days.

It's one of the stranger footnotes of Irish nationalism: veterans of one war marching into another one entirely, still fighting for a country most of them hadn't seen in years. ⚔️

Had you ever heard of the Fenian raids before today?
