Long before trucks and roads connected Ireland's west coast, a small black boat with blood-red sails was the only thing standing between a Connemara family and a winter without fuel.

The Galway ho**er, known in Irish as the húicéir, was built specifically for the rough waters of Galway Bay, with a sharp bow, inward-sloping sides, and a single mast carrying a mainsail and two foresails. Its hull was traditionally coated in black tar or pitch for protection against the sea, while its sails were dyed a deep rust-red using tannin-rich tree bark in a process called barking, a combination that made the boats instantly recognizable on the water. These boats carried turf, cut from the bogs of Connemara and County Mayo, out to the Aran Islands and the limestone landscape of the Burren, where there was no peat to burn, and they often returned loaded with limestone used to treat the region's acidic soil. It was dangerous work. Without a cabin or much freeboard above the waterline, ho**ers could swamp quickly in bad weather, and records of Galway Bay shipwrecks between 1750 and 1938 list 82 vessels lost to the sea.

A boat built to survive the exact waters it depended on for everything, fuel, food, and a way to reach the rest of the world.
