The sun is re-emerging this week, and we know the perfect location for you to enjoy it! ⛅☀️🍦🛍️ The Avenue at White Marsh is a welcoming place to shop, dine, and enjoy community events. You can find over 30 stores and restaurants, a movie theatre, outdoor spaces, and more!

We’re so grateful to the Avenue for sponsoring our Explore the Gunpowder Challenge this year, and we hope you will explore 😉 all that the Avenue has to offer.

Stop by to grab a Local Business sticker; The Avenue is stocking their stickers at the Makers of Maryland store. Their hours are Monday - Saturday (10 am - 9 pm) and Sunday (11 am - 6 pm).

Exciting event alert >>> We’ve got two Stream Cleanup Opportunities coming up!! 🙂‍↕️🧼💦
Anything that flows into a storm drain is carried directly into the closest waterway, unfiltered. 😣 This is where you come in!

Join us at a cleanup, and get your hands dirty to keep our watershed clean. (BTW, we provide gloves, so your hands won’t actually get dirty🧤)

🌊 Saturday, May 30th from 9 AM – 11 AM
One of our GVC Stream Captains is seeking 10 volunteers for an organized stream clean-up to remove trash from Gunpowder Falls State Park.

🥾 Sunday, June 7th from 9 AM – 11 AM
Let’s go for a hike and leave the trail better than we found it! 🫡
Note: The hike will follow a trail from the parking lot to Pot Rocks. The trail is 1 mile in each direction, has uneven terrain and a small stream crossing, and we will be carrying out all of the trash that we find!

Yesterday's Board of Public Works vote on the Days Cove Rubble Landfill was six months in the making, and the outcome reflects it.

The landfill will close a year early.
A Critical Areas assessment will be conducted.
Stronger oversight is now in place.
And Gunpowder Valley Conservancy will be part of the site's return to parkland.

This outcome belongs to the community — the commenters, the advocates, and the partners who showed up alongside us: Sierra Club of Maryland, Clean Water Action, Mad About Mud, and Gunpowder Riverkeeper. We are also grateful to DNR and the Comptroller's Office for their genuine engagement throughout this process.

We’re so obsessed with our reforestation team! 🤩 (They secretly love it when Elizabeth shows up to capture social media content 🤭📸)

The whole team—Kim, Colin, Shyanne, and Matt- recently completed their chainsaw training so that they can safely use chainsaws to manage invasive trees and shrubs at GVC planting sites. (Bradford Pear trees, we’re looking at you! 🫵)

The Reforestation Team is a dedicated and hardworking crew; they’ve made it possible for us to plant 800 native trees so far this spring. 🌳🌲💪

We're grateful to the for providing the funds and supplies for our chainsaw training. Thank you for supporting our mission!

BTW- Next Saturday is the final tree planting of the spring season... be there!

Earn your Explorer Sticker while learning about an important Gunpowder pastime—fly fishing! 🎣🐟

The Gunpowder is cherished by anglers for its population of native Brook Trout. This Sunday, come see what all the excitement is about and learn the basics of fly fishing! 😄
(No experience or equipment required)

Join us for a FREE “Intro to Fly Fishing” course with Rich Dennison of the Maryland Chapter of Trout Unlimited. This class will be held on land. Participants will practice casting techniques on a grassy area with Trout Unlimited’s fishing gear.

Days Cove Update!! 📣
The Days Cove Rubble Landfill lease renewal was postponed at yesterday's Board of Public Works meeting. The vote is now scheduled for May 20th, providing the Days Cove Task Force, DNR, and MDE more time to develop a lease that reflects community priorities and protects this Irreplaceable Natural Area, the surrounding waterways, and the public interest.

We are grateful for every person who took the time to submit a comment. This is what showing up looks like! Stay tuned for updates as May 20th approaches.

LAND PRESERVATION WIN!! The beautiful, historic campus at Oldfields School is now preserved in perpetuity by Gunpowder Valley Conservancy. 😍🎉
This new conservation easement protects over 127 acres of woodland and other habitats surrounding the school.🌲🦊🦋🐦

Oldfields is a 159-year-old boarding and day school for girls in Sparks Glencoe, MD.
They offer a vibrant academic environment and an internationally recognized Equine Science Concentration. 🏇📚 And, the students of Oldfields are environmental stewards—they recently participated in a stream cleanup with GVC!

Our Executive Director, Lindsay Crone, spoke on the impact of this milestone:
“Land in the Baltimore metro area is at a premium, and once it’s gone, it’s gone. That’s what makes conservation easements so meaningful.”

Stay tuned-- we will be hosting a community event at Oldfields this fall to celebrate this exciting partnership! 👀

The Oldfields parcel was preserved with funds provided by the state’s Rural Legacy program, administered by Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

We need your voice — by tomorrow (Tuesday) at 3 PM. 🗣️

The Board of Public Works is voting Wednesday, May 6, on the Days Cove Rubble Landfill lease renewal inside Gunpowder Falls State Park. The Days Cove Task Force is unable to support the agenda item as written, and we are asking the community to go on record in opposition.

Submitting a comment takes less than five minutes and goes directly to the Board.
Use the link below to oppose agenda item 46-LL under "Department of General Services." Days Cove is a designated Irreplaceable Natural Area within the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area — It deserves better protection.
