Thank you to everyone who took the time to attend and discuss recycling practices in Topsfield last night! Our top recommendation is RECYCLESMARTMA.ORG, which has a search bar and provides excellent guidance on materials consistently accepted by Massachusetts MRFs.

Below is the slide deck from last night’s presentation, which also includes links to additional resources for specific materials such as textiles, plastic bags, and more:

We’d also love to hear your suggestions. For example, last night, attendees came up with asking MassDEP to better define “scrap metal,” having “tiny items” graphics include straws along with loose bottle caps, and seeing if a business or facility in town might host a plastic bag drop-off station similar to those at supermarkets.

Please keep sharing your ideas. As a community, we can continue improving our systems and helping one another by staying engaged!

Finally, if you are interested in getting more involved with Sustainable Topsfield or joining the Sustainability Advisory Committee, please let us know. Email anytime: [email protected]

This week the Mello team added a flag drop off box to the new Georgetown transfer station. We have always collected our US flags for free, but we hope to receive more with this new collection box. All collected flags are thermally retired several times per year in a dignified manner with the assistance of our local waste to energy incinerator partners. 🇺🇸
