Because of you, humanists are showing up — and we're kicking ass!

Right now, Christian Nationalists are pushing the idea that America belongs to them alone. And a lot of nonreligious Americans are left asking a real question:

Where do I fit in?

Maybe you know that feeling.

The bone-tiredness of watching church-state separation get chipped away. The anger of seeing elected officials put one religion on a pedestal. The quiet ache of not knowing whether anyone around you actually shares your values.

Our job is to make sure that anyone searching for a community built on reason and empathy can find one.

To keep doing that work — and keep standing up for the wall between church and state — we need people like you with us. If you're in a position to give, we hope you'll consider a gift today to help us reach the next person who needs to know they're not alone. [https://humanistspftopeka.org/donate/]

Thank you.

This week, the Department of Defense officially removed approximately 180 recognized faith and belief systems from military records — including Humanists, Atheists, Deists, Pagans, Unitarian Universalists, and dozens of others. It follows Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth scrapping the Army's Spiritual Fitness Guide because he said it promoted "secular humanism," and his declaration that the U.S. military serves "one nation under God."

For nonreligious and minority-faith service members, this isn't abstract. It's erasure — the official message that their worldview doesn't count.

Humanists of Topeka exists because secular and humanist voices deserve to be visible, respected, and heard — in our community, in our state, and in our country. We build space for the nonreligious and the freethinking. We show up at Pride. We advocate for church-state separation. We demonstrate every week that you don't need religion to live ethically, care for your neighbors, or show up for your community.

We recently committed $2,000 to table at Topeka Pride and Leavenworth Family Pride Picnic — because representation matters, and these moments call for presence, not silence. We're asking for your help covering it.

A $5 monthly donation makes a real difference. So does any one-time gift. Every dollar goes directly toward keeping a secular humanist presence alive and visible in Kansas.

Friends,

As a member of Humanists of Topeka, you already know how meaningful it is to have a local community where we can share our values, discuss big ideas, and support one another.

We build a strong humanist presence right here in our neighborhood by working together and brainstorming solutions to common issues.

But our local impact is magnified when we connect with the broader humanist movement. That's why I wanted to share a special offer: Right now, the American Humanist Association — the national organization Humanists of Topeka is affiliated with — is offering our local group members a special discount (more than 50%!) on regular annual membership. Usually $45 a year, you can join today for just $20.

To join AHA at the over 50% discount, use this link: www.americanhumanist.org/joinnational

Why does national membership matter if you're already part of our local group?

AHA national is what makes local groups like ours possible. Unlike many national organizations that charge local chapters steep annual fees to operate, the AHA does not take money from us. They provide all of our leadership training, tech support, organizational tools, and more, entirely for free. Whenever I need guidance on running this group, managing our finances, reaching new members, or organizing important activism, the AHA staff is there to back me up.

But to continue to be able to provide this level of support, and increase support in the future, they need us, local group members, to come together to help fund it. Essentially, supporting AHA is a great way to support us. It ensures we keep getting the free resources we need to thrive, while connecting you to the broader secular movement.

When you join AHA, you also receive benefits: a subscription to The Humanist magazine, discounts on AHA conferences, and a real vote in how the organization is run.

As a member, you get to vote for AHA's Board of Directors. That means you help decide who leads the organization and what they prioritize. If you want AHA to invest more in local organizing and building communities like ours across the country, the board is where that direction gets set.

Membership connects you to a virtual network of humanists working through the same questions we wrestle with here: how to grow as individuals, how to engage our communities, how to make humanist values visible in public life, and even just sharing everything from good news to humanist memes.

Remember, being a member of Humanists of Topeka does not automatically make you a member of AHA.

To join AHA at the over 50% discount, use this link: www.americanhumanist.org/joinnational

Thank you for everything you do to make [Local Group Name] such a wonderful community. I hope you will consider taking this next step to stand with humanists nationwide.

For humanism,
Sean Davis

The American Humanist Association advocates progressive values and equality for humanists, atheists, freethinkers, and the non-religious across the country.

Today is International S*x Workers Day and a reminder that dignity and autonomy aren't privileges you earn by doing work people are "comfortable" with.

Humanists stand with s*x workers in their fight for safety, decriminalization, and the right to be seen as full human beings deserving of rights and respect.

Special Ask From AHA Legal Team:

The AHA's legal team is exploring litigation to defend the rights of transgender people and their families, and they want to connect with humanists who might be willing to be part of that effort. They're especially hoping to hear from people in states, like Kansas, where these protections are most under threat who are either transgender themselves or the parent of a transgender child.

If that's you — or someone in our chapter you think would want to know about this — the most important thing to say up front is that expressing interest commits you/them to nothing. It's the start of a conversation, not a signature on anything. The legal team would walk through what participation could involve, what it would and wouldn't ask of you, and how your privacy would be protected, and you'd decide from there.

Anyone who wants to learn more can reach out to Amitai Heller, AHA Legal Director, at [email protected] directly. Please don't pass along someone's information without their okay — the team would rather hear from people themselves, so it's confidential from the very first contact.
