Climb Out Topeka

Climb Out Topeka Raising awareness for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, The Climb brings our community together. Refreshments and snacks will also be provided.

Topeka is excited to be hosting its first Climb Out of the Darkness! The Climb is a worldwide event put on by individual Postpartum Support International (PSI) chapters to raise awareness and funds for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, including postpartum depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and psychosis. These illnesses affect 1 in 5 families, and are the most common complica

tion of childbirth. Topeka Kansas has never hosted an event like this before and we are very excited to be the first Climb leaders to directly support families in our community. We are going to host the first ever Team Topeka Climb Out of the Darkness on Saturday, October 7th 2023 at the Carousel Room in Gage Park. Community members will have the opportunity to join a walk in awareness of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, engage in creative activities, and socialize with one another. This event is put on by local volunteers and originally created by Postpartum Support International (PSI) which is an international non-profit organization. It is the vision of Postpartum Support International (PSI) that every birthing person and their family will have access to social support, resources, and informed professional care to address mental health issues related to childbearing. Please consider joining Team Topeka and participating with us in October! You can share your support and Join Here: https://www.classy.org/team/514608

This is why access to mental health is so overwhelmingly important for mommas and for the entire family that they come with. โ™ฅ๏ธ

"Mental health support for pregnant women reduces the incidence of postpartum depression and anxiety by more than 70%, a new study found.

The results from a large clinical trial funded by the National Institutes of Health indicate that an anxiety intervention given to pregnant women in Pakistan "significantly reduced the likelihood of the women developing moderate-to-severe anxiety, depression or both six weeks after birth."

Great news!! But... when in the world does a new parent have time to work out?! ๐Ÿค”

We're so glad the article pointed this out:
โ€œExercise is not a treatment for moderate to severe postpartum depression or anxiety,โ€[Dr. Eynav Accortt, PhD] told Healthline.

โ€œWhen people tout this claim as if you donโ€™t even need your antidepressants, you donโ€™t need to go to psychotherapy, all you got to do is exercise, thatโ€™s really a simplified and actually dangerous approach.โ€ ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Climb Out of the Darkness is the world's largest event raising funds and awareness for the mental health of new families, and is operated by Postpartum Support International (PSI). PSI provides direct support to families, trains professionals, and provides a bridge to connect them. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are the most common complication of pregnancy and childbirth, affecting 1 in 7 mothers and 1 in 10 fathers.
Let's get together! Climb Out of the Darkness brings communities together to shine a light on a darkness we often don't speak about. We share stories of hope and celebrate recovery as we gather together to raise awareness, give a voice to those who no longer have one, and walk together to symbolize our 'Climb' Out of the Darkness. Climb events are part community connection / part fundraiser for survivors, providers, and members of the community to give and received much-needed support.
