African Road builds long term relationships with local Changemakers, for the life, health and growth of communities in East Africa.

We are a global group of friends partnering with local changemakers for transformation in East Africa. We come alongside these leaders by providing respectful, practical help through financial support and collaborative project development. Our goal is to create long-term change that builds capacity and leads to healthy outcomes.

Jambo! Last night’s Story Share was something special. ✨

Participants of our July 2026 Learning Trip told the stories behind the amazing photos from Rwanda and Tanzania . Moments of real progress on the Forever Home, deeper history about the evolution of the Changemakers, the resilience of the women entrepreneurs of the Together Bakery and so much more.

A room full of good community, listening closely to stories that cross an ocean.

And the journey continues: another African Road group heads to East Africa this weekend. We can’t wait to hear what they bring home. 🌍

Today is DAF Day 🌍

If you hold a donor advised fund, today is a chance to put it to work. A grant recommendation to African Road supports community-led change in East Africa, where local Changemakers set the direction and lead the work in their own communities.

Changemaker Spotlight: Meet David Clemy in Uganda.

As volunteer Director of the Kitega Centre, David leads a community hub where children with disabilities and their families can flourish. The Centre serves families across the surrounding rural area.

David also leads a growing movement for flourishing across Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and in the DRC. He trains local facilitators who come from the communities they serve. Together, they help neighbors build trust, dream big and save together, and launch community building initiatives and small businesses using the resources around them.

The work starts with one question: What do we have, and how can we use it?

Today, hundreds of families are saving, building, and planning for the long haul, and new communities are joining every year.

Changemakers Spotlight: Meet Steven Turikunkiko and Peninah Mukashema.

Together they lead Community of Togetherness in Rwanda, a preschool and primary school where kids get a strong start and families get a place to belong. The name says it all. This is a school built by community, for community.

We're proud to walk alongside Changemakers like Steven and Peninah, who know their neighborhoods best and are building what their children need.

Today, on the International Day of Peace, we're reminded that peace isn't just the absence of conflicts but the presence of love, dignity and and community.

At African Road, we see peace built every day: in the trust of a savings group, in a classroom where a child feels safe to learn, in a facilitator walking alongside a family toward self-reliance. Peace is a practice, and it's rooted in community-led change.

Wishing our partners, donors, facilitators, Changemakers, volunteers and the communities we walk with a day and a future of true peace.

In 2013, Togetherness opened a small preschool in a repurposed goat shed in Rwanda. Today, under Changemakers Steven Turikunkiko and Peninah Mukashema, it's grown into a thriving campus with a preschool, an expanding Primary School, and a cafeteria. It was built brick by brick with the community. Real progress through togetherness.

This year, Togetherness welcomes 200+ students, preschool through 4th grade. Your support makes it possible. Thank you for all your support. 🙏

Last week, the Changemakers met in Tanzania for Strong Roots Together, a powerful few days of continuity, shared progress, and moving the work forward together. 🌍

Strong Roots Together is African Road's capacity-building process with Changemakers, built around exploring, listening, mutual learning, and deepening cross-cultural understanding.

The Changemakers requested coaching to create or improve organizational safeguarding policies and African Road consultant Sean Callaghan joined to lead a session.

The energy, the honesty, and the connection in the rooms said it all. These leaders are showing up for each other and for the communities they serve.

Grateful for every one of them. Grateful for the community.

This week, the Changemakers from across East Africa are gathering in Tanzania for Strong Roots Together. A coming together to build continuity, share ideas and progress, and keep moving their work forward.
