Happy 160th Birthday China Cabin!

Originally built in 1866 as the social lounge above the dining room of the Paddle Steamship China, this remarkable landmark has endured through generations because people cared enough to preserve it. Today, we are proud to continue that legacy.

To help us mark this important anniversary, a generous supporter has offered to match every dollar donated through September 15th, up to $25,000, doubling the impact of your gift supporting the preservation of the China Cabin!

As we celebrate, we honor not only the Cabin's rich past but also the community of members, volunteers, and supporters who help ensure its future.

Meet Smitty at the Railroad & Ferry Depot Museum this summer! Landmarks is proud to unveil a new addition to the Railroad & Ferry Depot Museum: a life-sized bust of beloved railroad worker Smitty, created by acclaimed local sculptor Howard Lazar.

A familiar figure along Tiburon’s waterfront in the 1950s, Smitty was known for his warm smile, booming laugh, and larger-than-life presence in the railyard. Today, visitors can come face-to-face with this cherished community member and discover the stories of the people who helped shape Tiburon’s rich railroad heritage.

Visit the Railroad Depot on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays between 1 and 4pm.

A rare glimpse of Tiburon before the November 1890 fire.

Our Spring 2026 newsletter features this remarkable photograph showing both the Tiburon Hotel & Saloon and the Sonoma House hotel, a detail that helps historians date the image to before the devastating fire of 1890. In the foreground, you can spot the railroad roundhouse and railyard, while the lagoon and the northern tip of Belvedere stretch into the distance.

The photo accompanies our newest article exploring the fascinating years when Tiburon’s Main Street was still known as Water Street, tracing the town’s transformation between 1882 and 1906.

This story is just one of many compelling pieces featured in the Spring edition of the Landmarks newsletter.
