Happy City of Water Day!🌊🌊

We had a busy day in the Bronx celebrating New York City’s 250 miles of coastline!☀️☀️ Our team started the day with water quality monitoring on the Long Island Sound, then hosted oyster monitoring with Turner Club and wrapped things up by tabling at The Bronx Is Blooming and Boogie Down to the Sound with SUNY Maritime College 🦪🐟🦀

A huge thank you to all of our incredible partners for making the day such a success!! Especially Waterfront Alliance for a fun Cardboard Kayak Opening Event and bringing City of Water Day together each year!!💙💙

Welcome to our June Creature Feature, the Blue Crab! 🦀🩵🌊

Meet the Blue Crab! Native to the western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, blue crabs are most abundant in Long Island Sound from late May through early fall.

Each Blue Crab has 4 pairs of legs! 3 are for walking, and the 4th is specialized for swimming.

Males, also known as “Jimmies,” have blue-tipped claws and aprons that are shaped like a Washington Monument. Females, also referred to as “Sooks,” have red-tipped claws and an apron shaped like the U.S Capitol Dome. Before reaching adulthood, female aprons are triangular.

🦪 Oyster spat deployment day is complete!

After a productive day counting spat-on-shell from Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program, we deployed new oyster spat (baby oysters) at our sites and are ready for another summer season at CIOR.

These shells have come full circle, from plates at City Island restaurants to the waters around City Island, where the oysters are now helping filter local waters and restore habitat.

We're excited to begin monitoring oyster growth and survival throughout the season. Sign up on our website to help track their progress over the coming months!

Welcome to our May Creature Feature, the Osprey aka the sea hawk! 💙

This month, meet Olivia & Oliver: our local osprey pair who return to one of our field sites each spring to rebuild their nest!

Osprey are the only raptors that feed almost exclusively on fish, making them incredible hunters of the Long Island Sound. You can often spot them soaring overhead or carrying fish back to their nests to feed their chicks.

Osprey populations once declined due to DDT pesticide use, but thanks to conservation efforts and cleaner waterways, they’ve made a remarkable comeback. Protecting the Sound helps iconic species like the osprey continue to thrive!

Welcome to our new monthly creature feature! Introducing you to the amazing species that call the LIS home!

This month, meet the striped bass. 🌊🐟

This icon of Long Island Sound returns after wintering down south. They migrate along the Atlantic coast, connecting ecosystems from rivers to open ocean. Striped bass play a key role as both predator and prey, helping keep marine food webs in balance.

Protecting the Sound means protecting species like the striped bass!
