Welcome to our new monthly creature feature! Introducing you to the amazing species that call the LIS home!

This month, meet the striped bass. 🌊🐟

This icon of Long Island Sound returns after wintering down south. They migrate along the Atlantic coast, connecting ecosystems from rivers to open ocean. Striped bass play a key role as both predator and prey, helping keep marine food webs in balance.

Protecting the Sound means protecting species like the striped bass!

Big win for City Island & the Bronx! 🦪🌊💵

City Island Oyster Reef has been awarded $403,000 in federal funding through the FY26 Community Project Funding initiative; thanks to the leadership of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 💙

With this funding, we will construct and implement large oyster reefs on City Island, beginning at Delmour’s Point. These reefs will play a vital role in improving water quality, restoring marine habitat, and protecting our coastlines.

This is what can happen when communities come together to protect the places they love! 🙌

Huge thank you to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her team, and our entire community. This is just the beginning!

Our 2025 Annual Report is here! 2025 was a big year for CIOR and our community 🌊

Together we achieved:
🦪 3,613 oysters in our cages
⏱ 7,455 volunteer hours
🎓 2,385 students engaged
🐟 4,700+ organisms identified (30 species)
♻️ 6,056 lbs of oyster shells recycled
🤝 26+ partner projects & events

We came, we plunged, we celebrated… (we froze 🥶🦪🌊💙)

The first annual Oysters on the Rocks was a polar success! ❄️ Over 75 incredible supporters showed up to plunge, sponsor, spectate, and celebrate in support of CIOR.
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped raise funds to transport our reef balls from Florida. Your support is bringing us one step closer to building Bronx oyster reefs and healthier waters.

And to our plungers who dove into 31° water… you are some brave oysters. 💙

Due to extreme weather conditions (3°F temperatures, –10°F wind chills, and 34-45 mph winds) we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone our Polar Plunge for safety reasons.

🗓️ Rescheduled for Saturday, February 21st

If you have already signed up, you should have received an email with further information and details about the rescheduled event. And if you still want to join us on the 21st, the tickets are still available!

Happy New Year from CIOR!!
2025 was fantastic, now looking forward to an even better 2026!!

As we wrap up an incredible year at City Island Oyster Reef, we’re feeling deeply grateful. 💙

Tons of dedicated volunteers joined us on the shoreline and in the water monitoring oysters and biodiversity, surveying fish, testing water quality, and caring for our Living Shoreline through cleanups that removed trash, debris, and invasive plants.

This was also a year of connection and collaboration. We were proud to be partners of student research projects, science expos, and school field trips! Working alongside amazing partners like , , and so many others helped strengthen our network and expand our impact.

It was a big year for events and fundraisers: from a joyful Water Jubilee and a packed Movie Night, to Viva La Sound welcoming over 800 people in support of our waters. None of this would be possible without our dedicated team, volunteers, partners, and community.

Thank you for showing up, getting your hands dirty, and believing in the restoration of marine ecology right here in the Bronx. We can’t wait to keep building this future together. 🌊🦪🌱
