📚 Let Books Be: Banned Books Week, Oct 4-10 📚

This week, NCNW East Bronx Section joins the American Library Association in celebrating the freedom to read.

Education is a pillar of who we are. Our founder, Mary McLeod Bethune, was an educator who knew that access to knowledge is power. When books are removed from shelves, the stories most often silenced are those of Black people, women, and other marginalized voices. Protecting the freedom to read is part of protecting the freedom to learn.

📖 Our featured read: The Color Purple by Alice Walker📖

Winner of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize, this novel follows Celie, a Black woman in the early 1900s South, as she finds her voice, her strength, and her sisterhood. It has also been repeatedly challenged and banned in schools and libraries, mostly over its depictions of sexual abuse and violence, its explicit language, and its themes of sexuality. Those are the same hard truths that make the book so powerful, and so necessary.

Read it. Reread it. Share it with a friend. Visit your local library and check out a banned book this week.

Goes Red for Women's Heart Health Day

Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer for all women, but Black women experience the highest burden. 59% percent of Black women ages 20 and over are living with some form of cardiovascular disease.

During the month of February schedule a heart health checkup with your healthcare provider. Regular checkups and screenings are important for early detection and prevention!
