We were very saddened to learn that Literacy Volunteers of Laredo is closing its doors after 40 years of service to the Laredo community. We know that the United Way of Laredo will do a wonderful job as the baton of adult education and literacy is passed to them, but we still mourn this end of an era.

Sending our grateful thanks to all the many volunteers, staff, board members, and other supporters who helped Literacy Volunteers of Laredo be such a remarkable organization for so many years.

And just like that, we're at the final regional symposium for our program year. A full day of learning kicks off very soon in Houston, with sessions for program administrators and classroom instructors, as well as the sleeper hit of the year - the lunchtime panel, featuring local experts in workforce and literacy, more popular at every symposium than we had even expected it to be.

The regional symposia are only possible because of the Texas Workforce Commission, our major funder, and TCALL , who support us through the provision of stellar trainers on a wide range of topics (and that's just the start of their support!) Find both TWC and TCALL as exhibitors at this summer's conference in Grapevine.

The new Literacy Texas program year starts September 1. More info and our new calendar coming soon!

πŸ”Ά What makes a student recruitment or orientation practice "effective"?
πŸ”Ά How can we measure and track effectiveness over time?
πŸ”Ά And which practices are tried and true when it comes to improving adult learner engagement and persistence?

We're delighted to be welcoming Kirsten Albritton, Ed.D to discuss all these questions, and more - this FREE online leadership session starts in less than an hour, but you still have time to register: https://www.literacytexas.org/calendar/leaders-jun-2026/

Announcing - our special guests in June! Dr. Glenda Rose, Director of TCALL, and Willie Williams of Microsoft, will both be in conversation with our very own Jacqueline Aguilera. Their topic? Digital and media literacy - one of the most crucial topics we can be talking about right now.

Registration is open for our June Best of Texas - as always, it's FREE to join us, and we offer certificates for the hour of PD if you stay for the whole session.

Stay sharp with The Expert Edge! ⭐
Our most recent session was Worth the Stay – Persistence in Action, designed for beginners to the topic.

We had 32 attendees, representing 23 organizations, and comments after the session included:

β€œI learned that being adult student driven is key to having a successful program.”

β€œThe [value of] journaling I had not considered.”

β€œI learned that being consistent with students, persistent, and making real life connections will help the learner. I also learned about the adult learner persistence website. Thank you, I enjoyed the training.”

β€œIt was helpful to share thoughts with others in the webinar. I also liked that the presenter shared what she does, not just thoughts. It was very practical.”

The Expert Edge is a quarterly training. Find out more here: https://www.literacytexas.org/edge

We get it. We know you're surveyed out.

But your window to directly influence what Literacy Texas does in the coming year is starting to close. And so far, we've received just 86 responses to our 2026 Annual Survey.

86 isn't bad, of course. And we're grateful for every single response - they're all helpful! But in a state the size of Texas - can't we do better? Are there really only 10 people in the whole Gulf Coast region who can share their ideas? Just 4 in East Texas? Just 1 in Panhandle? NONE in Alamo?!

Please respond to the Annual Survey. And invite your literacy friends to do the same! We promise we read every response, and consult the survey over and over again throughout the program year to see what you need. https://www.literacytexas.org/survey
