Learn about the proposed updates to the nuisance ordinance at May 5 meetings
The City of Tempe will host informational meetings regarding the proposed nuisance ordinance update at noon and 6 p.m. on May 5. This is in advance of a Tempe City Council discussion and vote on the issue at its May 14 meeting.
In November 2024, Arizona voters approved Proposition 312 which can impose an obligation upon cities and towns to address public nuisances even when occurring on private property. Proposition 312 allows property owners to apply for a refund of property taxes paid to the City if it is determined that the City’s efforts to mitigate a nuisance are insufficient.
To provide clarity and enforcement parameters, the City Attorney's Office is proposing a codification of what is already recognized by the courts as a private property use that can create a public nuisance. This will be limited to those uses where these three conditions are occurring: 1) regularly occurring distribution of food, beverages, or merchandise, etc.; 2) that leads to criminal activities or similar public offenses in the neighboring area; and 3) that substantially interferes with the use and enjoyment of the neighboring properties

Tempe Beach Park Bike Corral Sculpture Survey
We need your feedback on a new sculpture that will be installed on an existing plinth in Tempe Beach Park that is located just west of Mill Avenue on Rio Salado Parkway outside of the bike corral (see a map of the location when you click the below survey link). The proposed sculpture design by Daniel Nez transforms a bicycle sprocket into a hummingbird, pairing mechanical movement with the natural movement. The intent of the design is to celebrate the outdoors as a means of movement, connection and a passage of time. Your input will help inform the final design, survey closes May 14.
