What a turnout! Keep Tempe Beautiful had one of our biggest mornings of the year as 210 volunteers showed up strong at Tempe Town Lake North and made a massive impact. 💚

Hey friends! Join me and the Kiwanis Club of Tempe tomorrow, Thursday, August 6th at 12:00 noon for a fascinating presentation on the Tempe History Museum!

Jared Smith, Senior Curator of History, will share lots of captivating stories and insights about our city’s rich past. It’s always a treat to hear from local experts like him.

We meet bi-weekly (1st & 3rd Thursdays) at Friendship Village Tempe (2645 E Southern Ave) for dynamic talks from regional speakers on all kinds of topics. Beyond the great fellowship and lunch conversations, our core mission as a service club is serving the children of the world—and we live that out through hands-on projects right here in our community, from supporting youth programs and scholarships to back-to-school shopping and holiday giving.

Fun fact: Founded in 1952, the Kiwanis Club of Tempe has earned its nickname as Tempe’s “Club of Clubs.” We provided the original $25,000 seed money that helped launch Kiwanis Park (yes, the big one named in our honor!), have hosted Tempe’s Fourth of July fireworks for decades, and helped start favorites like the Fantasy of Lights Parade. Many of our members have gone on to serve as mayors, council members, and community leaders—proof of the lasting impact this club makes.

I’d love for you to come experience why KCOT is such a special part of Tempe. Let me know if you’d like to join me as my guest—happy to save you a seat!

🇵🇪 I was truly honored to attend the celebration of Peru’s Independence Day and the Bicentennial of Diplomatic Relations between Peru and the United States!

The Consul General of Peru in Phoenix, Miguel A. Ramírez, and his spouse graciously hosted the event on Thursday, July 30, 2026. We enjoyed classic Peruvian Pisco Sours, delicious traditional Peruvian food and desserts, vibrant dance, and wonderful music—an unforgettable cultural evening.

In a special gesture, the City of Tempe, under Mayor Corey Woods, officially proclaimed July 30, 2026, as Peru Independence Day in Tempe to honor the strong sister-city ties.

I was proud to represent both as a Board Member of Tempe Sister Cities and as a member of Mesa Sister Cities.

A huge thank you to Gaby Urias and Suzan Cruz, Tempe Sister Cities Co-Country Directors for Cusco, Peru, for coordinating our attendance and for their continued advocacy of these important relationships.

A little about Tempe’s Peruvian sister city, Cusco (sister city since 2012): Nestled high in the Andes at about 11,200 feet, Cusco was the historic capital of the Inca Empire and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s the gateway to Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and remains a living blend of indigenous Quechua culture and colonial history.

And about Mesa’s Peruvian sister city, Caraz (sister city since 1989): Located in the beautiful Callejón de Huaylas valley of the Ancash Region at about 7,380 feet, Caraz sits near the stunning Cordillera Blanca mountain range. It’s a popular base for trekking into Huascarán National Park and is home to Lake Parón, the largest lake in the Cordillera Blanca, surrounded by dramatic snow-capped peaks. Known for its peaceful atmosphere and resilience, Caraz is one of the few places in Peru largely spared from major earthquake damage.

¡Viva Perú! Grateful for these cross-cultural connections that bring our communities closer.

🌍✨ We’re ecstatic to share that Tempe Sister Cities was honored with the 2026 Sister Cities International Innovation in Humanitarian Assistance Award in recognition of our humanitarian work in Timbuktu, Mali in Memory and Honor of Aunt Sue Lofgren at last night’s Sister Cities International’s 70th Anniversary Homecoming in Washington DC!

A huge shoutout to Tempe Sister Cities 2nd Vice Chair Beth Lang, who joined me last night to accept the award on behalf of our organization. The dedication of our board members and tireless volunteers has made this program a shining example of our continued global humanitarian commitment. Thank you all for your unwavering commitment to building bridges across cultures! 🎉
