Tempe Spent $2M on a Sign with No Public Input — Here’s How We Can Make Sure It Never Happens Again

Tempe friends & neighbors,

We don’t need another surprise $2 million spend that catches everyone off guard.

That’s exactly why I’m pushing for a Citizen Budget Review Commission, a simple volunteer board that would review big-ticket projects before they’re approved, give residents clear answers on where our tax dollars are going, and provide the Mayor and Council with independent citizen input on the $1.7 billion city budget.

Just like our other 28 successful commissions, this one would bring real public voice and transparency to budgeting, no more waking up to major expenditures after the fact.

If you want Tempe residents to have a seat at the table on future spending decisions, please sign and share the petition today!

Learn about the proposed updates to the nuisance ordinance at May 5 meetings

The City of Tempe will host informational meetings regarding the proposed nuisance ordinance update at noon and 6 p.m. on May 5. This is in advance of a Tempe City Council discussion and vote on the issue at its May 14 meeting.

In November 2024, Arizona voters approved Proposition 312 which can impose an obligation upon cities and towns to address public nuisances even when occurring on private property. Proposition 312 allows property owners to apply for a refund of property taxes paid to the City if it is determined that the City’s efforts to mitigate a nuisance are insufficient.

To provide clarity and enforcement parameters, the City Attorney's Office is proposing a codification of what is already recognized by the courts as a private property use that can create a public nuisance. This will be limited to those uses where these three conditions are occurring: 1) regularly occurring distribution of food, beverages, or merchandise, etc.; 2) that leads to criminal activities or similar public offenses in the neighboring area; and 3) that substantially interferes with the use and enjoyment of the neighboring properties

Tempe Beach Park Bike Corral Sculpture Survey

We need your feedback on a new sculpture that will be installed on an existing plinth in Tempe Beach Park that is located just west of Mill Avenue on Rio Salado Parkway outside of the bike corral (see a map of the location when you click the below survey link). The proposed sculpture design by Daniel Nez transforms a bicycle sprocket into a hummingbird, pairing mechanical movement with the natural movement. The intent of the design is to celebrate the outdoors as a means of movement, connection and a passage of time. Your input will help inform the final design, survey closes May 14. 🌳 What an absolute pleasure it was to be part of the Tempe Cares project this year! We planted much-needed tree replacements in Kiwanis Park after last year’s microburst, helping our community recover and grow stronger.

I was proud to represent not one, but TWO incredible organizations I’m a member of: Tempe Leadership Class 38 and the Kiwanis Club of Tempe!

Pictured here with some of the great folks who joined us that day, including our wonderful Tempe Councilmember Nikki Amberg, who is also a fellow KCOT member! 🙂

If you’re interested in the next Tempe Leadership Class (I highly recommend it!), there are two upcoming information sessions:

📅 Wednesday, May 13th — Virtual on Zoom, 12:30–1:30 pm

📅 Thursday, May 21st — In-person at Drink Me Tea Room, 5:30–7:30 pm

DM me for more details or to sign up. Can’t wait to see you there!

Tempe deserves a Citizen Budget Review Commission to give residents a stronger voice in how our ~$1.7 billion city budget is spent.

My op-ed in the Tempe Independent outlines why this independent, volunteer commission would boost transparency and fiscal oversight, just like Scottsdale’s successful model.

If you support greater citizen input on our finances, please add your name to the petition.

Every name helps show the City Council there’s real community interest. Thank you!

OPINION — As a longtime Tempe resident, I believe our city would benefit greatly from one more volunteer commission, a citizen budget review commission.

Tempe friends & neighbors, we seriously need a Citizen Budget Review Commission, a volunteer board like our other successful city commissions.

It would review Tempe’s $1.7 billion budget, analyze major projects for feasibility, examine reserves and forecasts, and give the Mayor and Council valuable citizen input on our finances.

This would bring greater transparency, help residents better understand where our tax dollars go, and support smarter, long-term decisions for our city.

If you support stronger fiscal oversight and community voice in budgeting, please sign and share!

What an absolute honor, D-MAK Productions has been named to the Sun Devil 100 for the fifth year in a row!

The Sun Devil 100 is ASU’s prestigious annual program recognizing the fastest-growing alumni-owned and alumni-led organizations. To make the list, companies must be ASU alumni-led, in business for at least three years, meet strong revenue thresholds, and operate in alignment with the ASU Charter.

I’m incredibly proud to share this milestone with my college best friend and business partner, Danny McManus. Building D-MAK Productions together, our video production and AV services company, has been one of the greatest blessings in my life.

Every year this recognition hits different. It’s a powerful reminder that I’m already living my dreams… everything else is just the cherry on top.

Grateful beyond words. 🔥🏜️
