Episode 7 | A Voice of Resilience
Roya’s Story: Unbreakable Spirit in the Face of Adversity
"They tried to take everything from us. But they couldn't take our dreams."
In late 2021, Roya’s world changed overnight. As province after province fell to the Taliban, fear spread quickly. One night, during dinner, her father quietly said, “Leave immediately. The Taliban have entered Bamiyan.”
They fled with nothing but urgency and hope.
From Bamiyan to Panjab, from Kabul and back again—Roya’s life became a cycle of running, hiding, and surviving. When the Taliban reached Kabul, she thought it was the end.
Her homeland was gone. Her future —uncertain.
Girls were banned from school. From sports. From art. From living freely. Roya fell into depression. At just 16, she was already asking, “Is being a girl a crime?”
But through the darkness, she made herself a promise:
I will not give up. I will not disappear. I will fight for my future.
In secret, she continued studying. Quietly reading books, taking online courses when no one is watching. Around her, classmates were being married off, giving up, vanishing into silence.
But not Roya.
She chose hope. She chose learning. Because for her, education is more than knowledge—it’s resistance. It’s survival. It’s freedom.
And she’s not alone.
Thousands of Afghan girls like Roya are still holding on to their dreams—often in secret, often in silence—but with unwavering strength.
