The Temecula Valley puppy raisers celebrated Maverick today with some fun activities and gifts! Maverick was raised by first time raiser/high school student Addy, who did an amazing job raising him. He will be returning to GDA|TLC at the end of this month and will either join the breeding colony or be neutered and join the guide dog or service dog program. We're so proud of Maverick and Addy and her family!

Temecula Valley puppies Maverick and Zelda worked at a veteran resource fair at the Menifee Public Library today. We talked to SO many veterans and families; hopefully we can get help get more veteran service dogs placed and maybe some puppy raisers too! And extra big thanks to guide dog Essex and his handler, Air Force veteran Fred for coming out to help support us as well! (I didn't get a pic of Canine Development trainer Vikki, but she came to help with the event too - thanks, Vikki!)

Our newest puppies just started Puppy Kindergarten and showed us that they are not only cute, but they're smart as well! After meeting with Canine Development trainer Vikki in a Zoom session, Laguna's and Pepsi's raisers met in person a couple of days later to review the lessons in person. We introduced the paw pad, which teaches the puppies how to target; and the tethering technique, which teaches the puppies that their self control will be rewarded. We also talked about puppy "timeouts," recall, and the eternal struggle of housetraining. ☺️ We finished with a little bit of playtime. We can't wait to see how these puppies will do as they grow, learn, and mature!

The Temecula Valley group had a super fun time at "Puppies and Pilates" today! At this fundraiser, Zuko, Maverick, and Zelda, with a cameo from new Temecula Valley puppy Pepsi; and the assistance of San Diego puppy Herbie, and therapy dogs Ramen, North, and Archer. We walked around with the dogs talking about GDA|TLC's program before the class and encouraged Pilates practioners during the class. It was so fun! Many thanks to Jennifer Fetterman for organizing and hosting, and to Club Pilates Temecula for coming out!

Temecula Valley skills class this afternoon: our whole group was there and did great! (We need more raisers - tell your friends!) Zuko, Maverick, and Zelda worked on paw pads for a bit, then walked through the park with different handlers. After that, they worked on the "wait" cue before getting a dish of kibble - they all did so well! For the last few minutes of class, the puppies settled at their handlers' side while we talked about upcoming events. Great job, puppies and raisers!

With a group our size (3 puppies) it was all paws on deck to work a 6-hour Earth Day festival! We talked to lots of great people, explaining about the need for puppy raisers so GDA|TLC can provide task-trained service dogs for people with visual impairment, veterans with PTSD or mobility issues, children with autism, or facilities. Great job, Zuko. Maverick, Zelda and raisers! 💜💙❤️

The Temecula Valley group had skills class today, which Zelda was able to attend for the first time! Zuko and Zelda worked on dog distractions and impulse control by doing position changes on their paw pads and walking on the paths at beautiful Harveston Lake.

We've been working hard with Team Zelda this past week so that she can start getting out and experiencing the world. One evening, we just worked on getting in and out of the family vehicle. She was rewarded for her hard work by having a short playdate with fellow puppy-in-training Zuko. Yesterday, we worked on going to church, from how to walk up to the building, to how to handle greeting people, and how to sit quietly in service. It was nice for her raiser to be able to attend service for the first time in over three months! Zuko got some great experience at a different church with vinyl-covered stairs that he hadn't experienced before too.

The experiences were great confidence-builders for Zelda and her raiser - good job Team Zelda!
