This is a White Bryony root that we removed from a project site this summer. White Bryony is a w**d that is relatively new on the scene in the Palouse region. It sends out vines that climb and shade out desirable trees and shrubs.

W**d management is an important part of protecting working lands and natural resources across Whitman County. It is a major consideration for our projects and we utilize a variety of approaches to ensure that w**ds are managed in a way that doesn’t have a significant impact on neighboring land.

Chemical control with herbicide, mechanical control with mowing and hand removal, and competition from desirable grasses are all important tools. Early identification and consistent management often make the biggest difference over time.

Pine Creek Conservation District works with local partners and land managers on practical resource concerns across the landscape.

Our neighbors at Palouse Conservation District and farmers across the inland northwest were recently featured for their work on an innovative program called Farmers Leading Our United Revolution in Soil Health (FLOURISH). Through the FLOURISH program, Palouse-area farmers are leading the way testing and sharing their experiences with using a combination of practices like cover crops, livestock integration, and reduced disturbance to improve soil health in dryland systems.
This kind of farmer-led innovation is what drives long-term resilience across our region’s working lands.

Healthy riparian areas do important work across the landscape.

Vegetation along streams and waterways can help reduce erosion, support water quality, provide habitat, and improve overall stream health.

Across Whitman County, many farmers and land managers are already implementing stewardship practices that help protect and improve riparian areas while supporting productive working lands.

Through partnerships with the National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Whitman County Voluntary Stewardship Program (VSP), Pine Creek Conservation District works with local producers on voluntary, locally led conservation practices that fit their operation and goals.

Stewardship along waterways often happens through small, consistent efforts over time. Plans can be customized to your goals and could range from in channel planting of willows to rows of trees and shrubs along the width of the riparian zone.

As conditions dry out across Whitman County, small preparedness steps can help reduce risk and support more resilient working lands and rural communities.

Vegetation management, defensible space, equipment maintenance, and reducing potential ignition sources all play a role during fire season.

Pine Creek Conservation District continues working with local partners through funding provided by Washington’s Climate Commitment Act to support community wildfire resiliency efforts across the region.

Preparedness looks different for every operation and property, but planning ahead matters.

RAINBOW TROUT RELEASE AT ROCK LAKE

On May 28, nearly 50 students and teachers from Oakesdale, St. John, and Endicott joined Rock Lake Conservation District, Pine Creek Conservation District, and the Washington State Department of Ecology at Rock Lake for Trout Celebration Day!

Since January, students have been raising rainbow trout in their classrooms, carefully observing their growth and learning what trout need to survive. Along the way, they explored how clean, connected waterways, healthy habitat, and good conservation practices help support fish and other aquatic life right here in Whitman County.

During the field day, students released nearly 450 rainbow trout fry into Rock Lake, tested water temperature and turbidity, and investigated the tiny organisms that help make up a healthy aquatic ecosystem.

A big thank you to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife for facilitating the School Cooperative Program and connecting local schools with hatcheries that provide trout eggs for classroom learning. We are also grateful to the Department of Ecology for helping fund the time and effort that make outreach programs like this possible.

We are so proud of these young conservation stewards and look forward to raising more fish next year as we continue building strong connections with our local schools, students, and waterways

Pollinator habitat comes in many forms across working lands — from riparian areas and field borders to native plantings and flowering cover that support beneficial insects throughout the growing season like this buckwheat flower that is hosting dotted blue butterflies

These habitat-enhancing practices help add diversity to the landscape while supporting pollinators and other wildlife important to healthy agricultural systems. Small areas planted intentionally can provide meaningful habitat over time.
