Adopt at the Bluebonnet Horse Expo
Last month we shared the first three steps of the adoption process, and now it’s time to talk about when to get added to the list for your dream horse — and what to expect on adoption day.
Before anything else, don’t forget to become a member and get your application submitted first. Once those pieces are in place, you’ll be ready to request placement on the adopter list and prepare for the big day.
Step 4: Submit Your Top Choices
September 18th at 9:00 AM (Emails sent earlier will not count to keep the process fair.)
Email [email protected] with up to three horses you’re interested in.
Guidelines:
You may only be first on one horse’s list.
Rank your choices in order of preference.
You may remove your name from a list at any time.
You may not add your name to a new list until Expo day.
Exceptions may be made by the adoption team.
A week before the Expo, you’ll receive an email if you are first in line to meet a horse. The email will tell you what time you need to be there and more information on the day of.
Adoption Day Process
Watch the Challenge Horses
You’ll see your selected horses compete in their Freestyle and Obstacle Course classes.
Check In
Visit the Adoption Table to receive your Test Ride Card, which allows you to ride your chosen Challenge horse with the trainer present. After your ride, check back in with the adoption team to share your decision.
Test Riding Horses
A designated riding area will be available.
Rider requirements:
Closed‑toe shoes
Appropriate riding attire
Helmets recommended for all riders
Helmets required for riders under 18.
Adoption Fees
Adoption fees will be posted on the website in September. All adoption fees are half‑price on Expo Day. Adoption fees are non-negotiable.

Everything you need to know before adopting your next partner
Bluebonnet horses come from all backgrounds and disciplines. Some thrive when they have a job to do—whether that’s arena work, ranch tasks, or learning new skills. Others prefer relaxed trail rides and quiet adventures. And many are happiest simply being a companion, enjoying the pasture with a friend.
No matter what you’re looking for, our adoption team can help you find a horse whose personality and needs match your goals.
If you’re considering adopting at the Expo, this guide walks you through each step.
Step 1: Become an Approved Adopter

What to Expect When You Adopt from Bluebonnet
When you adopt from Bluebonnet, you’re bringing home a horse who has received several months of training with their Challenge trainer. Each horse arrives at the Expo prepared, evaluated, and cared for by trainers who know them well.
Every horse available for adoption will be:
Up to date on Coggins
Current on vaccinations
Recently trimmed
Recently vetted for dental needs
Our goal is to ensure each horse is healthy, safe, and ready to transition into their new home.
Adoption Fees

FAQ
If I have applied before, do I need to fill out another application?
No. If you have applied in the past, we should already have your application on file. If you have moved, or changed the boarding facility, then you will need to fill out another application.
Can I go see the horse before the event?
No. The horses are working hard with their trainers to prepare for the Expo. You will have time to meet and test ride horses at the event before deciding to adopt.
Can I talk to the trainer before the expo?
Yes. You are welcome to message the trainers through their pages. You can find the list of trainer pages here: https://bluebonnetequine.org/bluebonnet-horse-expo/
Do I have to be at the event to adopt?
Yes. You must attend the Expo to meet the horses and complete the adoption process. You will need to bring a halter and lead rope to take your horse home. If you don’t have one, visit our Used Tack Sale at the Expo.
Do I need to bring a trailer?
Yes. You are responsible for transporting your horse home. We will have volunteers available to help you load if needed.
If I am not the 1st person in line for the challenge horse, does that mean I will not be able to adopt?
Not necessarily. The first person in line may decide if the horse isn’t the right fit, may choose another horse, or may change their mind. One staff member was fifth in line for a Challenge horse and still adopted him.
Are all the horses you have available for adoption in the challenge?
No. In addition to Challenge horses, some foster homes bring horses to the Expo who are also available for adoption.

Here is the Basic Skill's video. One side note, Oliver is very good about picking up his feet but for some reason today, he wasn't having it on his right side. This is probably due to some soreness he was experiencing. Gabby is a little hesitant as well and this is due to Mayo, who has a long history of side kicking when he isn't feeling it. Nonetheless, even at his worst, Oliver is the best. With temps ranging from 100-108 the last three weeks in our area, I am not going to force the girls to ever do this over and over again.

I think it is real important for a potential adopter to understand Oliver's diet. His diet has really helped his health and well being. Oliver gets a very small (about a handful) of senior feed with his cushings pill every day. I watch him eat this feed to make sure he is taking the pill. I have not been successful with pill carriers or hiding the pill in a snack. This seems to be the only way he will accept the pill. After this, He gets a scoop of alfalfa pellets in which he has no issues eating and he gets an entire flake of alfalfa that I will often divide in half - one in the morning and one in the evening. Recently, on his vet visit, I asked why he is so picky about treats, etc. They said it has something to do with the cushions pill which changes the way the horse accepts feed.

This is a fun trick that the girl's love teaching horses. Booping a ball. There is real no reason for them to do this but they love it, so why not! I love Gabby's laugh.

Gabby does like doing things on her own. I was watching Pyper when I walked over to her trying to teach Oliver side pass in liberty. Not quite right but I felt this shows what a wonderful and patient horse Oliver is.

I'm waaay behind uploading training videos. I had some techinical issues with facebook but I think I have them resolved by now! Fingers crossed. Gabby doing some desensitization with Oliver while in liberty.
