Angela and I (Brian) rebuilt the website so it's easier to find the live hermit crab cam, Angela's books, the shop, and the story of our wild purple pinchers here in the Keys. Alliance members also get a new members area with Shells In, Shells Out and Shell Tracks.

That is by design. This hermit crab made that modification himself to allow for a better fit.
Hermits will eat and modify their shell as they grow… if it’s your house, it’s gotta be comfy right?
While hermit crabs don’t make their own shells, they have no problem making them their own 🏡🏠🏡🏠🏡

It may look empty, but it is not. It’s so important to leave shells in place, even an empty shell is a future home for a growing hermit crab.

Birds of a feather flock together, and so do hermit crabs. So many times you see hermit wearing the same style shell hanging out together. I’m sure it’s because they approve of the same styles, like Jordan’s or Nikes. 😎

It’s not just a shell. It’s a home. 🐚

GivingTuesday is December 1. Leading up to this day of generosity, we’re sharing how small acts of conservation can make a difference for wild land hermit crabs in the Florida Keys.

At Crustacean Plantation, we’re working to expand conservation signage across Monroe County, redistribute donated shells, and educate children and adults about the little lives sharing our islands.

Awareness can change what someone sees in an empty shell and inspire them to leave a future home behind.
