A bit of backstory on Steve. Back in January Steve had a horrible accident and was run over by a car. The experience cost him both his main claws and an eye. I found him and brought him in to rehab, where he ended up dropping more claws. Over a few months of rest, he molted and regrew his legs and claws. 2026 has been a whirlwind of a year for Steve.

I found him 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 OMG. I can’t believe I found him. He’s in the same style shell then his old one. It fits him much better. 💕💕💕 I can’t believe I found STEVE!!!!

Crustacean Plantation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the education, awareness, and conservation of wild native land hermit crabs in the Florida Keys.

Our mission is simple: to help folks understand these remarkable crustaceans, the important role they play in our ecosystem, and the challenges they face in the wild. Through education, research, community outreach, and conservation efforts, we work to ensure that future generations can continue to experience these fascinating beings.

The Atala butterfly (Eumaeus atala) is the only species sometimes referred to as the "atlas" or "coontie hairstreak" that is native to South Florida and the Florida Keys. This small, brilliantly colored butterfly is easily identified by its velvety black wings with iridescent turquoise or blue-green spots and a vibrant reddish-orange abdomen. History of Survival ~ Once thought to be extinct in the United States in the mid-1900s due to the over-harvesting of its primary host plant, this species has made a remarkable comeback.
