The Steward of the Edge
A Tampa Bay Signal Spoken Word

There are people you almost walk past.

No spotlight.
No stage.
No headline.

Just a shovel in the sand…
planting something most people don’t even notice.

Tom didn’t move to Tampa to be seen.
He came for something simpler—
space, weather, a different pace of life.

But somewhere along the way,
he became responsible for a line most of us never think about…

The edge.

Where land meets water.
Where storms decide how far they’ll go.
Where mangroves hold the line quietly, every day.

He plants red mangroves at the water’s edge—
because they need more.
More nutrients.
More resistance.
More fight.

Black mangroves go higher.
Less demand.
Different role.

And still…
people pull them out.

Even when they’re protected.
Even when they’re necessary.

This piece is about the unseen work.
The quiet responsibility.
The people holding things together
while the rest of us are just passing through.

It’s about choosing to care…
even when no one’s watching.

Because every place has an edge.

And someone…
is always out there holding it.

Know someone quietly making Tampa Bay better?
Drop their name. We might go find them.

Faces of Tampa Bay #006 — Tom, The Steward Of The Edge

Met Tom out at Apollo Beach Preserve.

Moved down from Ohio after retiring, now works as the park supervisor.

He was planting mangroves — explaining the difference between the ones that grow at the water’s edge and the ones that sit farther back.

Said people still come through and pull them out.

Even though they’re protected.

Most people see a beach.

He sees what needs to be maintained.

This is Tom.

We didn’t plan to meet Tom.

That’s usually how it happens.

A quick conversation turns into a story…
and suddenly you realize how many people are quietly shaping this place.

So now we’re curious—

👉 Who’s someone in Tampa Bay with a story we should tell next?
👉 Someone doing something quietly meaningful?
👉 Someone people might walk past… but shouldn’t?

Tag them.
Send us a message.
Or just drop a name below.

We’re building this one story at a time.

You meet people like this… everywhere. This is Harry. 23 homes built. 20 years in one.
Now letting it go…for something quieter. Next stop: Blue Ridge Mountains.
Some people don’t rush chapters. They build them.

Faces of Tampa Bay #005 — Harry, Harry the Long Builder

From New Jersey to New Port Richey… and soon, the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Met Harry while shooting one of his homes this week.

He’s flipped 23 houses over the years—this one included—but this wasn’t just another project. He’s lived here for 20 years, slowly investing into it, shaping it into something solid.

He’s asking just under $800K… and he’s in no rush to sell it.

Because what’s next is already lined up.

A quieter life in the mountains.

But here’s where it gets interesting…

Before the houses, before the engines...Harry was a musician.

Played keyboard. Took 2nd place in a competition back in Jersey. Played at Stone Pony. Even opened for Bruce Springsteen when he was just getting started.

Then one day, working on a car engine, he crushed his hand.

Changed everything.

But not completely.

He still writes. Still composes. Still carries the music...just in a different way now.

That’s what I love about doing these.

You meet someone for a “quick shoot”… and realize you’re standing in the middle of a full life story.

And usually, another chapter just about to begin.

If you’ve ever made a big life shift like that… I’d love to hear your story below 👇

Or if you, know someone like Harry?

Someone who’s built something over time…
changed paths…
or is quietly stepping into a new chapter?

I’m documenting stories like this across Tampa Bay.

Tag them or send me a message—
we might feature them next.

Sometimes you go out looking for a place to park…

…and end up finding a story instead.

We couldn’t get into Fred Howard Park. It was too packed.

So we parked along the causeway and started walking.

Fish everywhere under the bridge.
Birds circling.
Fishermen lined up along the rail.

One guy cast his rod…

…and it slipped right out of his hands into the water.

Gone.

Just like that.

A little further down, we started talking to another fisherman.

Said he moved down from West Virginia years ago.
Ran a remodeling business.
Now retired.

Fifteen years since he had been saltwater fishing. Now it's all he wants to do...

He talked about spots.

John’s Pass.
Anclote Bridge.
Places where you don’t always catch something…

but you know you might.

Then he pulled one in.

Held it up for a second.

We talked a bit more.

And then he threw it back.

That’s the rhythm of it.

Catch.
Release.
Keep going.

Before we left, I asked his name.

Rich.

Second Rich this week.

This is Rich.

Faces of Tampa Bay #003 — Rau, The Bridge Builder

Name: Rau
Origin: Brazil → Tampa Bay
Location: Tampa Bay shoreline
Artifact: The Crossing

Rau didn’t come here because it was easy.

She came here for her daughters.

Back in Brazil, she was a lawyer.
Worked with one of the largest iron ore companies in the world.

A stable life. A clear path.

But she wanted something more for her kids.

Better opportunities.
Stronger English.
A different future.

So she made the move.

Learning a new country is one thing.

Learning to communicate in a second language
as an adult — while raising two daughters —
is something else entirely.

It wasn’t easy.

Not for her.
Not for her kids.

But she kept going.

Put herself out there.
Kept speaking.
Kept learning.

Now she’s here in Tampa.

Using her experience to help others navigate that same journey —
helping people immigrate legally
and build a life of their own.

This is Rau.
