Knowledge token...🇵🇷✨️🌿🪘🎋

Did you know that "güiro" is a word from Island Arawak? This language was spoken by the people who settled in the islands of the Caribbean. Their ancestors migrated from South America and mixed with earlier Indigenous peoples. Their descendants are known as the Taíno.

Güiros are small percussion instruments found in different varieties across the Caribbean. Traditionally, they are made from the dried gourd-like fruit of the higüero, or calabash tree (Crescentia cujete), which grows across the tropical regions of the Americas. Today, güiros can be made from modern materials like metal or plastic. Like maracas, they are Indigenous in origin.

The Puerto Rican güiro is played by scraping the carved ridges with the tines of a special pick or scraper often called a "púa” and can be heard in songs like "Jíbaro hasta el hueso" by Ecos de Borinquen. This guïro was a gift of Teodoro Vidal, who captured Puerto Rico’s history by collecting thousands of objects from the island.

¿Sabías que "güiro" es una palabra del idioma arawak isleño? Esta lengua la hablaban los pueblos que se asentaron en las islas del Caribe. Sus ancestros emigraron de Sudamérica y se mezclaron con pueblos indígenas anteriores. Sus descendientes son conocidos como los taínos.

Los güiros son pequeños instrumentos de percusión que se encuentran en diferentes variedades a lo largo del Caribe. Tradicionalmente, se elaboran con el fruto seco del higüero (Crescentia cujete), un árbol que crece en las regiones tropicales de las Américas. Hoy en día, los güiros pueden fabricarse con materiales modernos como metal o plástico. Al igual que las maracas, son de origen indígena.

El güiro puertorriqueño se toca raspando las crestas talladas con las púas de un instrumento especial, llamado de igual manera "púa", y se puede escuchar en canciones como "Jíbaro hasta el hueso" de Ecos de Borinquen. Este güiro fue un regalo de Teodoro Vidal, quien documentó la historia de Puerto Rico al coleccionar miles de objetos de la isla.

Puerto Rican culture isn’t just something we celebrate—it’s something we live, breathe, and share with in community every day.

From the powerful sounds of our drumming to the stories passed down through generations, we're constantly reminded that we are a people of resilience, creativity, and pride.
