Filling the Void - Florida Every person has two types of hunger…
physical and spiritual. At Filling The Void, that’s why We Feed. The Soul. Our mission is to lift up the homeless and needy.

Every person has two types of hunger…physical and spiritual. The people we serve are hungry alright, but they’re also desperate for something deeper – hope. They’ve told us so. We take a two-fold approach to help the “whole” person, feeding them physically with high-quality sack lunches and ministering to their spiritual needs, as well. We serve Arby’s roast beef and Chick-Fil-A sandwiches while s

haring Bible verses and offering to pray with folks, too. The goal is to foster lasting life-change and to see them go from meals to miracles. Since 2003, we’ve served more than 400,000 meals. Recently, we served 51,224 meals in 2024, which is our new high in a calendar year. We serve people where we find them – shaking their hands, learning their names, and pointing them to other agencies where they can get additional support. About 1/3 of those we serve are homeless. Another 1/3 live in shelters or temporary housing. The other 1/3 are simply just trying to get by and keep up with the bills. In a nutshell, we’re mobile, mission-minded, and motivated by Matthew 9:36 where “Jesus saw the crowds and was moved with compassion.”

We served over 100 people today at the Salvation Army Red Shield Center. There was one gentleman who said his the favorite part of his lunch was reading the devotional that we put in the bag. In fact, he liked it so much we saw him rummaging through the trash looking for other devotionals that had already been thrown away. He took them back to his chair and began reading them one by one.

Another gentleman approached one of the volunteers after we finished serving to tell us that the devotion was the favorite part of his day, and that he really needed it. This is a stark reminder that serving lunch is only part of the mission.

Yesterday, our student-led Filling the Void team — Making Heaven Crowded — had an incredible day of outreach and service in downtown Tampa. Here are a few of the stories they shared:

Alex — We met a man from Ukraine who initially wanted nothing to do with Jesus and said he had his own personal god. After we prayed for him, he ran after us saying, “I want to learn more about your God.” God clearly moved in his heart — praise God!

Rex — We talked about fully committing to Jesus and not living on the fence. He expressed a desire to dedicate his life to Christ and seemed genuinely interested in having a real relationship with God.

Nathan — He shared that he’s struggling with lust and asked for prayer. He wants freedom and deliverance, and we encouraged him to run from temptation rather than fight it alone.

Jennifer — She had never heard the gospel explained the way we shared it. She expressed a desire to pursue a relationship with Jesus and seemed genuinely hungry to learn more.

Michelle — Her boyfriend passed away on the street just a couple of weeks ago. She had been angry with God, but we walked through the story of Job with her and talked about praising God in both the highs and the lows. She chose to forgive, and now she’s longing for a deeper relationship with Him.

God is moving. Lives are being touched. Seeds are being planted.

So proud of this team for boldly stepping out and sharing the love of Jesus. 🙌

This past Saturday, Filling The Void partnered with Making Heaven Crowded as 12 volunteer students from the University of South Florida took to the streets of downtown Tampa to reach the hungry, homeless, and hurting with 150 prepared lunches.

Every outreach reminds us that God is moving in powerful, personal ways.

They connected with a woman who had previously been closed off to the Gospel when they spoke to her, but this week her heart was open and engaged. They were able to give her a Bible and spent time walking through Scripture together.

They connected with a man who is known to struggle with a speech impediment and has previously found it hard to stay focused in conversation. The students have been praying for him, and this week he was attentive and fully engaged — a powerful answer to prayer.

They were encouraged by a man experiencing homelessness whose joy and faith in the Lord were unwavering despite his circumstances.

They also met two friends committed to holding each other accountable as they fight to stay free from addiction — a beautiful picture of godly fellowship.

Real people. Real struggles. A real God at work

A gentleman came up to us after we served him lunch, holding up the devotional that we put in each bag. He said that it was the best part of his lunch! Amen! We Feed. The Soul.
