- September 5
September 5, 1990 – Four years before the Congress repealed that provision of the 1948 Women’s Armed Services Integration Act prohibiting women from serving aboard combat ships, the Navy deployed the first mixed-gender crew aboard a US Navy vessel during wartime—the USS Acadia.
Deployed from September 5, 1990, to April 26, 1991, in support of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the destroyer tender USS Acadia’s primary mission was repair of other vessels. It was also the first US Navy ship to rearm vessels with Tomahawk missiles. Its crew included about 28% women—to accomplish its mission, it couldn’t deploy without them.
Offering a glimpse into shipboard operations, the USS Acadia deployment yearbook showcases the teamwork, skills and shared duties of the ship’s crew, men and women, as well as shipboard life. “This cruise book is like a diary of the entire ship’s eight-month period of deployment,” said Navy Engineman Petty Officer Second Class Julieanna Walker when donating the yearbook.
The excellent service of women aboard the USS Acadia contributed significantly to Congress’ decision in 1994 to repeal the law prohibiting women from serving aboard Navy combatant ships. This was one of many advancements that took place for women in the military because of their outstanding service during Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield.
