Meet Graham a handsome young man deserving of the Luis E Torres Scholarship Award, for the 2021-2022 school year Graham was diagnosed in 2013 with an illness not yet curable he excels in sports and has maintained a 4.7 GPA, 72 college credits earning an associate degree along with his High School diploma, nice job Graham keep it up remember that “at the end of hoPE is the start of PErseveranc”…

I am so grateful to receive this scholarship. It will be a huge blessing to myself and my parents as I am 1 of 5 children and 3 of us have intense medical conditions that take ongoing resources and can make paying for my education challenging. Thank you to Mr. Torres for modeling what it looks like to overcome health challenges and make a difference in this world. It is such a blessing to be chosen for this scholarship. Thank you to the board and everyone who made this scholarship possible.

I want to share with you this post written by my son’s nephrologist that cared for Luis for over 15 years; it’s really wonderful to be able to find doctors that not only treat the ailment but also the patients emotional well being, my son was blessed with many doctors that cared for him with upmost professionalism, compassion, understanding and offered all their knowledge to help my son lead a productive and normal life. Thank you Dr. Charles Sanders and the staff at Lifelink, forever grateful!

Isn’t she lovely, this is Annika a beautiful young woman and another recipient of the 2020-2021 Luis E Torres Scholarship Foundation. Annika was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at the age of 5. Despite the rigorous daily regimen to maintain lung function Annika has been able to achieve academic and athletic excellence...

So thankful to have received this scholarship! Foundations like this one are making dreams become a reality as well as making people like me feel seen and supported in their disability. Such a blessing to get this award and put it towards my education! I am so thrilled, thank you Luis E Torres Scholarship Foundation.

Meet Isaiah a very handsome young man and one of the recipients of The Luis E Torres Scholarship Foundation. Isaiah suffered a spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage. He is thriving now and doing well as a freshman in college. His charming smile tells it all!

I am overwhelmed and grateful to receive The Luis E Torres Scholarship Foundation award, sometimes bad things happen to us and it can be difficult to find purpose in it. I will continue to work hard and strive for excellence regardless of my struggles and will encourage others to do the same.

Outside of him not being here with us, couldn't think of a better way to celebrate my brother's birthday than by announcing the 2014 recipient of The Luis E. Torres Scholarship Fund:

Dear Mrs. Torres and the Board of Directors,

I applied for this scholarship for a couple of reasons. The first being, I needed the funds to complete my education at the University of Florida where I am currently attending, and the second because I knew Mr. Torres, Mrs. Iris Torres’ son. He was my seventh grade Pre-Algebra teacher and I did not know then that he would make such a big and astounding impact on my life. I honestly have him to thank, he furthered my education in seventh grade and now in college.

Words cannot say how thankful, blessed, shocked, grateful, an abundance of things, on how I am feeling about receiving this scholarship. Thank you all so much. I know the decision-making process is lengthly and probably extremely hard and I will show to you all that you made the right decision in choosing me. Currently, I am a Public Health Major on the Epidemiology tract (study of diseases). Mr. Torres and I had some things in common, I know he had a history of disease and I also, have a brain tumor, this is why I decided to pick Epidemiology. I want to further my education to the best of my ability and help + provide care to the numerous people in this country and this world suffering from various diseases. You all are helping me achieve my goals, aspirations, and making them a reality.

Again, thank you so much. I am so blessed, when I am older, I will give back to everyone who has helped me on my journey.

Thank you Mr. Torres for inspiring me in pursuing the field of Epidemiology — I am currently pursuing my MPH in Public Health & Epidemiology at CU. 2014 seems like quite awhile ago, but I’m that much closer to my goals! 🤍 Sarah
