Hey folks- this is Susan. Sorry to be so late with my weekly post. I've been bit under the weather for a couple days.

I hope everyone stayed safe during last weekend's hurricane. At my house we were without power for 18 hours and have a big limb down in the backyard. But the Good Lord was watching over us and we are just fine.

This weekend is another story! I hear we are going to have some actual Fall weather for Trade Day. From 8:00 am through 1:00 pm, there will be tents set up along King Street - and some fun activities for the kids. Be sure to stop by and see our folks at the Talisi Historic Preservation Society tent. They will have information about the Society and how to join, items for sell and raffle tickets.

The raffle tickets are part of our fund-raising event. We have a big basket of Tallassee related items that some lucky person is going to win. The contents are on display in one of the windows at the Museum. Stop by and take a look. You can buy your tickets on Trade Day at the tent or at the Museum. You can also buy tickets at WACQ during the week and from any THPS members. Tickets will be on sale for $5.00 each or 3 for $10.00. Ticket sales will run until December - when we will draw the winning ticket at the THPS Christmas Party. We'd love for you to participate in our fund-raiser!

The Museum will be open on Saturday. I am going to try to find one of our members who can open early. So do stop by. We love it when you visit.

Here are some of the contents of the gift basket we will be raffling off this fall. This is a fundraiser for the Tallassee Historical Preservation Society and tickets will be available shortly. Please participate if you can.

FYI --- I've decided that the Museum will be closed on Saturday. Even if we don't have dangerous weather in our area, it's likely to be very messy. Everybody stay safe and we will see you next weekend.

Don't forget to put Tallassee Trade Day on your calendar - October 17th. The THPS will have a tent set up and we'd love to have you stop by. You will definitely want to check out the basket we will be raffling off. The contents of the basket will be displayed in one of the Museum's windows - starting later today. It's an interesting assortment of locally-related items. I will let you know when the raffle tickets go on sale.

Hey friends! Hope you have been enjoying the beautiful weather. I'm loving the sunshine, but it did get a bit warm today. Cooler weather is coming - that's what I've heard.

In any event, stop by the Museum on Saturday for a little dose of local history. We'll be open from 10 - 3.

And here's a few Tallassee things for you to put on your calendar.

On Saturday, October 10th, you can see the long-awaited Indian document called "History of a Creek Tribal Town" at the Mount Vernon PAC here in Tallassee. This will be the completed project that includes the first part, which some of us have already enjoyed, followed directly by the second part that concludes the story. I've been told it will probably be 1 1/2 hours long. There will be two showings - 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm. Check the Mount Vernon Performing Arts Center page for online ticketing info. You can also get your ticket at the box office when it opens on the day of the show - usually an hour before show time. I've just found out that you can also purchase your PAC tickets at the WACQ radio station across the street.

The MVPAC has a lot of shows on its schedule, so you'll want to follow them on Facebook.

Then on Saturday, October 17th, you'll want to come to town for Trade Day over on King Street. It will run from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm. We - the Tallassee Historical Preservation Society (THPS) - will have a tent set up along King Street. You definitely want to stop by and see what we are all about and participate in our fund-raising raffle. I'll be at the Museum that day so you can stop by after your Trade Day activities.

There are many ways to support our little town, and your support is much appreciated.

Oh my! I've been so busy this week that I forgot to remind you the Museum will be open on Saturday from 10 to 3. According to the weather guys, it should be a nice day to stroll around downtown Tallassee. Stop by if you get a chance.

It sure was nice to have a bit of cool weather early this morning!
Maybe it will be cooler tomorrow as well and we will all enjoy being out and about.

I'll be at the Museum from 10:00 until 3:00. Come see me if you find yourselves downtown. I'd love to show you some of our treasures.

Can the name of a town be selected from a hat??? Stay tuned for the full story. 😁

And here's the rest of the story!

There was a town that had several names before it became the town we know today. The townspeople did not like the other names - Bridgeville, then Bentonville. Sooo - on December 8, 1851, the town fathers got together and each put a name in a hat, then had one drawn out. The name drawn was entered by a probate judge who had recently read a book about Napoleon Bonaparte and his exile to the island of Elba. You guessed it - the name drawn was ELBA. The name stuck and the town was incorporated on April 13, 1853.
