Community is at the heart of everything we do, and this National Public Health Week, we are proud to be meeting people where they are to support healthier, stronger communities while advancing rural health across the regions we serve.

This week, our team has been actively on the ground, serving students at Stewart Street Elementary in Quincy, connecting with older adults at the Madison County Senior Center, and engaging future leaders at Florida A&M University. Through these efforts, we provided health education on the importance of routine health screenings and successfully screened over 35 individuals.

In addition, our Youth Health Leadership Program continues to empower the next generation with the knowledge and skills to lead healthier communities, while our ongoing food distribution efforts help ensure access to fresh, healthy food for families in need.

Our work reflects our mission to strengthen health systems, expand access to care, and improve outcomes for communities, with a strong focus on rural health, through evidence-based, community-centered approaches.

Access to quality health care, nutritious food, and reliable health education should not be determined by zip code.
Expanding access to essential services, strengthening families, and delivering community-based programs remain central to improving health outcomes across rural communities.

We are excited to continue this work through Harmony & Hues: A Jazz and Art Fundraiser on June 11, 2026, from 6:00–9:00 PM at Parkview at Cascades. This special evening will bring together live jazz, inspiring art, and community connection in support of programs that increase access to healthy food, family-centered services, and health education for children and families in Florida’s rural counties.
Sponsorship and volunteer opportunities will be announced soon.

Save the date to join us for an unforgettable evening as we invest in lasting, community-driven impact. We invite you to be part of this effort, donate using the link in our bio.

Food plays a vital role in supporting both physical and mental well-being. Our upcoming community event, Food is Medicine: Nourishing the Body & Mind, will bring together youth, families, and community members to explore practical ways to build healthier lifestyles through nutrition and prevention, with a special focus on strengthening health outcomes in rural communities.

Join us for an engaging experience featuring a live healthy cooking demonstration hosted by UF/IFAS, where participants will learn how to prepare simple, affordable meals that support heart health and overall wellness.

The event will also highlight the powerful connection between nutrition, physical health, and mental well-being, while addressing the unique challenges and opportunities related to improving rural health. Participants will leave with practical knowledge and tools they can use to support healthier families and stronger communities.

We look forward to bringing the community together to learn, connect, and take meaningful steps toward healthier living.

Last weekend, the DSR HealthCheck team was proud to participate in a Family Wellness Expo hosted by the Tallahassee Chapter of The Links, Incorporated at FAMU DRS. We were honored to have Dr. LaDarius Gammage serve as the anchor speaker, sharing important insight on public health and chronic kidney disease, while our team provided health screenings, education, and community resource connections for attendees.

A special thank you to our first volunteers, Ar’Mani Moore and Darla Moore, for helping us create a warm and welcoming space for community members. We are grateful for opportunities like this that allow us to connect directly with the community and support healthier futures together.

If you would like to partner with DSR HealthCheck for health screenings, health education, or speakers at your next event, we would love to connect.

Congratulations to our team member, Dr. Kiara Sims-Thrasher, on successfully defending her dissertation titled “Sociodemographic Factors and Dating Violence Among Adolescents Living in Rural Southern United States Communities.”

Dr. Sims-Thrasher’s research examines factors related to adolescent dating violence in rural communities across the southern United States. Her work provides important insight into an issue that affects the health and well-being of young people and families in many rural communities.

Our work is centered on expanding access to health care services, education, and resources to support positive health outcomes. Dr. Sims-Thrasher’s scholarship reflects this commitment by contributing knowledge that can inform programs, prevention strategies, and policies that support safer and healthier communities.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Sims-Thrasher on this important achievement.

Our team members proudly represented DSR at the 6th Annual Emergency Management Day in Tallahassee, hosted by the Florida Division of Emergency Management. Centered on the theme “Excellence in Action,” this two-day event provided an opportunity for emergency management professionals, policymakers, and community partners to engage directly with legislators, exchange ideas, and strengthen strategies that enhance preparedness across Florida.

Through sessions held at Florida State University’s Turnbull Center and engagement at the Florida Capitol, participants explored practical approaches to response coordination, disaster readiness planning, and cross-sector collaboration. The focus remained on real-world strategies that strengthen community health and ensure neighborhoods are prepared before, during, and after emergencies.

At DSR Public Health Foundation, we recognize that strong emergency management partnerships are especially important for rural communities, where coordinated planning and local engagement play a vital role in supporting families and improving long-term community health outcomes.

We are committed to turning these conversations into action that strengthens response efforts, safeguards families, and builds lasting stability within the communities we serve.

Advancing child health starts with connection, collaboration, and community engagement.

Yesterday, our team spent the day at Children’s Day at the Florida Capitol, connecting with families, partners, and leaders from across the state.

At our booth, we provided health education resources and engaged with attendees on topics that support the well-being of Florida’s children, including preventive care, access to services, and the broader factors that influence healthy development. The event created space for valuable conversations and new connections with organizations equally committed to strengthening child health outcomes, expanding access to resources, and aligning efforts across sectors.

This kind of collaboration moves our work forward and highlights our shared responsibility to advocate for policies, programs, and partnerships that put children first. Together, these collective efforts advance a shared goal, ensuring every child in Florida has the support, services, and opportunities needed to grow, succeed, and thrive.

Another week, another impactful YHL session.

This week, our Youth Health Leaders explored the power of Artificial Intelligence and how technology can be used to promote wellness in real, practical ways. During our interactive workshop, students and community members learned how AI is already shaping health and wellness, from nutrition guidance and fitness tracking to mental health tools and public health communication.

Thank you to our partners at PhusionAI, and to Jabaree Allen, for leading an engaging and forward-thinking session that challenged participants to think critically about innovation, responsibility, and the role young leaders can play in solving today’s health challenges. Through hands-on discussion and exploration, our youth gained insight into how technology can be leveraged to strengthen rural communities.

At DSR Public Health Foundation, we remain committed to equipping the next generation with the knowledge and tools to advance rural health outcomes. When we invest in youth leadership and digital literacy, we invest in healthier communities.

We invite the community to join us this Thursday for our upcoming Youth Health Leadership session, “AI for Youth Health Leaders: Using Technology to Promote Wellness.”

Participants will explore AI in youth-friendly ways, design innovative solutions to real health challenges, and learn how to use technology responsibly and ethically to strengthen their communities. Grounded in leadership development and community health action, this session empowers young leaders to turn ideas into real impact.

We are also excited to welcome Jabaree Allen of PhusionAI, who will share valuable insights on the future of AI and its growing influence in community health.

Families, students, educators, and community members are encouraged to attend not only to support our youth leaders, but to learn, engage, and grow alongside them. This session offers valuable insight into how emerging technology is shaping the future of health and wellness, and how our entire community can be part of that progress.

In recognition of Heart Health Month, DSR Public Health Foundation was proud to host free health screenings and share heart health education resources at the Pink Goes Red: Line Dancing for Heart Health event hosted by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Tau Theta Omega Chapter. The event brought the community together to raise awareness about heart health while promoting movement, chronic disease prevention, and wellness.
