Joyful Motherhood

Joyful Motherhood In Malawi, maternal and infant mortality rates are among the highest in the world. AMHI is the US-based 501c3 that funds Malawian NGO Joyful Motherhood

AMHI provides home-based nursing care to vulnerable babies and postpartum mothers to save their lives. AMHI supports Malawian nurses to provide in-home nursing care and nutrition to the world’s most vulnerable postpartum mothers and newborns. Through our Mother Care and Baby Care programs, our nurses visit women and infants in their homes and villages to assess their health, educate families, and

mobilize communities to support their most fragile members, especially in emergencies. In Baby Care, the little ones admitted into the program are those who, without our support, would typically be discharged home and die within a few weeks. This happens because they are premature, or are twins/triplets and the mom doesn't have enough milk, or because they lost their own mom in childbirth and have no source of breastmilk. Families are poor and without support, these little ones quickly fade away. Nurses in Baby Care identify these "at risk" newborns and the provide home based care until they celebrate their first birthday. In Mother Care, the mamas we enroll are those who had particularly difficult births and whose health is not completely stable at the time of discharge. We all know that when the mom is sick the rest of the family suffers and this is even more pronounced in resource poor settings. Her newborn and toddler are often the ones to suffer the most when she cannot care for them. Nurses continue visiting her to ensure she has what she needs to speed her recover and discharge her from the program once she is stable.

In collaboration with the Lilongwe District Health Office, Joyful Motherhood organized a Lactation Training focusing on small and sick newborns with nurses from Bwaila, Kabudula and Area 25 hospitals. The training was conducted by , an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and Registered Nurse.

This is a specialized training to optimize breastfeeding of small and sick newborns, including most up-to-date evidence based content. 18% of babies in Malawi are premature. This training is relevant to ensure that the fragile newborns are getting all the nutrition they need.

Breast milk is the ideal nutrition for infants under six months old, providing the best foundation for healthy growth and development. But for some mothers, breastfeeding can be challenging, and *No mother* should have to face those struggles alone.

At Joyful Motherhood, our nurses support mothers who are experiencing difficulties with breastfeeding and help them explore safe, appropriate feeding options when needed.

We provide compassionate breastfeeding support, encouragement, and lactation guidance to help mothers establish and maintain adequate milk supply whenever possible.

Every mother deserves care and support. Every baby deserves the opportunity to thrive.

Joyful Motherhood’s Lead Nurse Nitta Chakanika led a Lactation and Breastfeeding training for the Joyful Motherhood staff.

This session was designed to equip our team with the skills needed to provide high-quality breastfeeding support to our clients.

By sharpening our expertise, we can also better support our partner hospitals to ensure that mothers achieve successful lactation.

Our goal is to increase rates of successful breastfeeding, maximize milk supply for new mothers, and reduce common complications such as low supply and breast infections.

These efforts support the main objective of reducing cases of malnutrition among babies in our communities.

In honor of , we are elevating the World Health Organization’s theme: "Together for Health. Stand with Science."

🍵At Joyful Motherhood, we focus on evidence-based care for the vulnerable clients we serve. We start with the provision of age appropriate nutrition to infants at risk of experiencing malnutrition.

💉We educate guardians on the importance of hand hygiene, of vaccines, of sleeping under bed nets. We also teach them about danger signs and when to seek health care.

✅️Our nurses distribute zinc and packets of oral rehydration salts to be used in case of diarrhea, Each of these interventions in isolation may seem insignificant, but each has been proven to improve health and reduce mortality.

💝Evidence-based care provides the roadmap for improved maternal and child health, but donors make it a reality.

This World Health Day, we invite you to join us. Support targeted nursing care and nutritional support that saves lives by donating today.
