IWW History

Today in Labor History June 11, 2002: Earth First! and IWW activists Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney won $4.4 million in a false-arrest lawsuit against Oakland police and the FBI. They had been arrested for blowing up their own car while they were in it. The jury unanimously found that six of the seven FBI and OPD defendants had deliberately framed Bari and Cherney in an effort to crush Earth First! and chill participation in Redwood Summer.

The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) condemns the anti-community rioting and violence that has occurred in Belfast over the past few evenings. Such acts have been deliberately orchestrated, bears all the hallmarks of previous racial and sectarian pogroms of the past.

Fascist organisers - emboldened by capture of political power across the world, and the erosion of workers’ rights, are attempting to weaponise and manufacture further division among working class communities.

We are called to remember the events that occurred in Ballymena last year - shameful acts of destruction and targeting of people based on race and migration status, that represented working class communities in the worst way to the rest of the world. Fomenting racism and violence, reactionaries seek to cause irreparable harm to homes and people - and to the unity of our class.

We call upon our communities, fellow workers and the labour movement, to unite as one and stand up to this tidal wave of manufactured dissent, by actively supporting organised anti-racist rallies in Derry and Belfast this weekend:

Derry: Guildhall Square, Saturday 13th June, Assemble at 2pm

Belfast: City Hall, Belfast, Saturday 13th June. Assemble at 1pm

Only through workers solidarity can we defeat racist hate and division.

Wobbly History

Today in Labor History June 8, 1917: The Granite Mountain/Spectacular Mine disaster killed 168 men in Butte, Montana. It was the deadliest underground mine disaster in U.S. history. Within days, men were walking out of the copper mines all over Butte in protest of the dangerous working conditions. Two weeks later, organizers had created a new union, the Metal Mine Workers’ Union. They immediately petitioned Anaconda, the largest of the mine companies, for union recognition, wage increases and better safety conditions. By the end of June, electricians, boilermakers, blacksmiths and other metal tradesmen had walked off the job in solidarity.

Frank Little, a Cherokee miner and member of the IWW, went to Butte during this strike to help organize the miners. Little had previously helped organize oil workers, timber workers and migrant farm workers in California. He had participated in free speech fights in Missoula, Spokane and Fresno, and helped pioneer many of the passive resistance techniques later used by the Civil Rights movement. He was also an anti-war activist, calling U.S. soldiers “Uncle Sam’s scabs in uniforms.” On August 1, 1917, vigilantes broke into the boarding house where he was staying. They dragged him through the streets while tied to the back of a car and then hanged him from a railroad trestle.

Author Dashiell Hammett had been working in Butte at the time as a striker breaker for the Pinkerton Detective Agency. They had tried to get him to murder Little, offering him $5,000, but he refused. He later wrote about the experience in his novel, “Red Harvest.” It supposedly haunted him throughout his life that anyone would think he would do such a thing.

Today in Labor History June 7, 1913: The radical labor union, IWW, held a fundraising pageant at Madison Square Gardens. The production featured songs and a reenactment of events from the ongoing Paterson strike. It was created and performed by 1,000 mill workers from the silk industry strike. John Reed organized a march of strikers into Manhattan for the pageant.

🏳️‍🌈This year, kick off Pride Month right!🏳️‍🌈

🏳️‍⚧️The Real You Electrolysis Workers United is a union of trans and q***r workers (part of the Portland IWW), who provide gender-affirming care to their community.

😱The workers begun their organising drive following a number of dubious terminations by the company - terminations that put the workers in debt for tens of thousands of dollars, due to the conditions of the obligatory training/certification program “paid for” by the company.

🤬The company has responded to the organising efforts of our fellow workers with a blatant union-busting assault, firing even more workers, and putting them in debt as well.

💪As a result, Real You Electrolysis Workers United are currently on an indefinite strike!
